Stomach flu - when can you give milk again?

The stomach flu is running its course throughout our house right now and we have all had different symptoms.

    My question is about DD.

She vomited for about 8 hours on Monday. She had an episode ranging from 5 minutes to 20 between each one. After she stopped about 9pm, we put her to bed. She had Pedialyte, rice, toast and water yesterday. She appeared to be much better - much better than I was doing!

This morning I gave her 8 ounces of milk since she had been fine. She sat in her chair and drank it right down. Within about one minute, she burped and projectile-vomited the milk right out. NASTY.

Is she still sick? Did I give her milk too early? When can you give milk again? Is it back to rice and toast again?

I wait until they have gone 24 hours, and then I offer it in small amounts. I also get Lactose free milk for a week or so after they have been sick, since the lactose is harder to digest.

I would cut out the milk again for 24 hours. She may not really still be sick, but her stomach might just be "tender" (for lack of a better word) from all the throwing-up. And as PP said, when you do start with the milk again, just give her a little. For one thing, if she throws it up, it won't be so yucky. She also might be less likely to throw it up.

Also, the last time mine had the stomach bug, they both were sick for 2 days, then seemed totally fine for a day, and then just when we were breathing easier, they got sick again for one more day. After that, when they seemed fine, they really were.

Hugs, it is so frustrating never knowing what you can feed them! At that time I remember saying to DH, "I wouldn't even mind the throwing up so much -- it's the next 24-48 hours of having to feed them rice & toast that really gets to me." It's especially hard when they're too little to understand why you're not letting them eat what they want.

About a month ago we went through a bout of loose, runny stools. I did not give them milk for two weeks while this was going on, and then waited until they had a couple days of normal stools. I did give them yogurt during this time, so they were getting calcium that way. I would stick to the BRAT+yogurt diet until she is better.

Sounds like she just was too thirsty and drank too much all at once. If you are worried, give her another day in between and try again.

Thanks for your responses. I'm going to wait until tomorrow to try again. She was just awful yesterday. She was clingy and cried almost all day -unless she was taking a nap. I guess this thing lasts longer than 24 hours.

Whatever I had was less severe, DS was too.

Now, DH, that's a whole different story. He got it last night and let me just say that we've been married for 8 years and this is the first time I've seen him vomit. It was a longggg night at our house.

Who wants to come and stay here while I go to a hotel? Anybody? Anybody? I'll pay you in hugs! :)
