Stomach flu crankiness

We've been dealing with various symptoms of stomach flu for the past 7 days. We all got sick in the end, but one ds got it particularly bad - he was the first to get it and is still suffering from it. His discomfort has somehow released the beast within so that he has become intolerably fussy during all of his waking hours. We're talking full-blown 2-year old, rolling on the floor kicking and screaming tantrums - back to back for hours and hours. He gets so worked up that it's impossible to get him to eat anything. He won't sit in his highchair, and refuses any food I offer him. I know he's hungry, though, because he keeps crying 'I want!' and pounding on the gate to the kitchen. He's only throwing up once every 24 hours now, but he's still not at all interested in milk and I'm lucky if I can get him to eat more than a few crackers, some fruit and maybe a few spoonfuls of yogurt in a day. Anyone else experience this sort of personality change when their kids are sick? I'm calling his doctor in the morning, and hoping we can get him feeling better soon. I'd rather clean up buckets of vomit than deal with screaming and kicking all day! I want my sweet little boy back!

I'm so sorry he isn't feeling well & hope he gets back to himself really soon, that's a long time for a stomach bug to hang on. :hug99: It's probably a good idea to take him to the doctor & maybe he/she will have some good advice for you. Will he eat maybe popsicles or jello?

I'm writing to you because I JUST WENT THROUGH IT. I have 17 month twin boys and a 2.5 year old daughter. They all got socked by it at the same time. Same thing as you are describing - vomiting only once/every 24 hours and stuff. ONE twin turned into a monster - and he is the one who got it first and had it the longest. It literally lasted 7 days for us (as far as the sickies go), BUT the tantrums and horrible new personality lasted another week! I called the doctor. She explained that a baby's FIRST stomach virus is the worst, lasting the longest. (must be true because it's my DD's 2nd virus and she got over it in 48 hours).

I want to tell you that he is now himself again - and the tantrums were unbelievable - throwing himself onto the floor - banging his head - all the stuff you see in the movies! The doctor gave me strict instructions to IGNORE him - NO ATTENTION at ALL - just make sure he's okay physically. And, it worked. He's having mini-tantrums now (normal ones) Any questions - just give me a shout out!!!

Oh my gosh- that makes perfect sense. My DS #1 had a horrid stomach virus last November. This current one was a quick 48-72 hour recovery for him. DS #2 has been sick since Thursday and it keeps going. He has been throwing up about once every 24 hours now. This is his first stomach virus which could explain why it is hanging on...

We went to the doctor yesterday, and he thinks my fussy boy may have an ear infection. We started antibiotics yesterday, and we noticed a minor improvement right away. He now has periods of time in the day when he's normal, but nighttime is still terrible and he's also back to his old tantrum ways in the morning. No one in this house is getting any sleep, and we're reaching a breaking point! There's nothing worse than being up all night with a cranky boy only to have him increase his crankiness when you finally give up on sleep and bring him downstairs!

LynnMarie, it's nice to know someone else has gone through this, though the thought of another week of this is unappealing to say the least. My problem is that I can't ignore him during his tantrums because we have hardwood floors and he could really hurt himself banging his head. Now I'm worried that he'll keep having tantrums since he gets the result he wants.

I have to say this is the hardest week we've eve had with the boys - harder than their first few months.

We have hardwood floors too and the doctor swears up and down that he won't hurt himself (majorly) - she was more concerned if we had glass tables, etc!!!

Hang in there - my little one is sweet again - Thank God!
