Still on Folic Acid?

Discussion in 'Pregnancy Help' started by lisamoneymaker, Feb 4, 2010.

    Hi all -

I'm sure it's pretty common, but I was on 4mg folic acid (prescription) in addition to my regular prenatals through IVF treatments and then up till now. My Rx just ran out - I'm not sure whether it's doing anything anymore. Does anybody else's regular OB recommend high dose folic acid through the 2nd/3rd trimester? I'm 20 weeks. I know the big push is 1st trimester for spinal development, but after that, is more than just a prenatal still required, I wonder?

  1. Hi there!! I was told to take my prescription dose of folic acid in addition to my prenatals for my entire pregnancy. Why don't you call your OB and see what they say. In my case, my sister had spina bifida so it's more of a precaution.

I haven't been prescribed folic acid at all, they just asked if I had started taking prenatals and I said yes and that was that. Is that weird?

Yes, I am still on it. They told me with twins they reccomend the same dose from IVF through pregnancy (AM/PM) and with triplets you got to 3 times a day.

I took an extra folic acid pill (as well as my prenatal vitamin) my entire pregnancy.

I have been on 1mg extra folic acid with my prenatal the entire pregnancy. My RE rx'd me enough for the entire pregnancy.

I was on an extra 400mcg (in addition to the 800 in regular prenatal vitamins) my entire pregnancy. You can just buy those in the vitamin aisle though, they did not require a prescription.
