My boys still aren't sitting up. Pedi said at their 6mo appt that he would expect them to by 7 mo, but still no sitting here. B can do it for a few seconds and then topples over. C still straightens his legs and flings himself backwards. Both do fine if they are supported. When should I start to be concerned. They were 10 weeks early, so I know they technically have lots of time, but......

Do Bumbos actually help them with sitting?? The babysitter used to put them in it for 10-15 minutes each day, but we kind of figured that was plenty, so we didn't invest in them. Now I'm home with them for summer, but it seems odd to buy them now since the boys are getting so much older. What do you think?

By the way, my micro-preemies are 20lbs a piece at 7 months. No one even believes they were 2 1/2 months early anymore.

Mine sat at 7 and 8 months actual and they were 2 months early. Give them time and lots of supported practice to develop the right muscles.

DD learnt how to sit on her own just last week..and stay seated for about 10-15s before she topples over. DS is refusing to even roll over, let alone sit. But I'm sure he's getting there...paeds said he might be slower in physical milestones (e.g. sitting, crawling, etc) because he's the smaller twin, and generally weaker than DD. She also said to give him time, he's getting there, am sure yours too!!!

My boys are 33 weekers and they took quite awhile to sit on their own also and even longer to crawl! They just started crawling this week. We used a PT from EI as their doctor suggested that it might be helpful and it is a free service as it is federally funded although your child does have to qualify by being a certain% behind the average which ours did as they do not take adjusted age into account! I'm not mentioning that b/c I think you need to I'm just throwing it out there as an option. Every baby is different and some just take a little time, don't worry it will happen...it sounds like they are on their way they just need a little more time :D Our PT did tell us that the bumbo chair was good to help them develop the muscle strength to sit although it might be a waste to buy them now b/c is sounds like they are so close to doing it on their own! Hang in there it will happen soon:)

My preemies took a while to sit too. At 7 months we had an Early Intervention check up and b/c they were able to sit up assisted they said it was fine. We just kept practicing, even if it meant them falling over a bunch (with pillows around). My boys didn't crawl until the end of 10 months and didn't walk until 14/15 months.

Congrats on getting them to such great weights!!! Very impressive!

    Way to grow, babies!

Like pp said, just give them lots of practice. It sounds like they are doing great and will be sitting on their own soon!

My boys weren't 100% sitting unassisted until almost 9 months, though they were crawling well before that. They were still toppling over occasionally up to about a month ago!

I wouldn't be concerned; you may have to go by their adjusted age for certain milestones. As my girlfriend (who had 2 preemies) says, "sometimes you just need to give them their preemie credit". :)

Both of mine were past 7 months. Jack was just starting to do it for a few seconds at 7 months, and Anna was a month behind him. And they were not premies. I would not worry at all. Jack walked at 12 months, Anna at 13. At 16, they are crazy monkeys who let nothing stop them, so I haven't seen any signs of gross motor delay. I think they are fine.

my girls didn't sit unsupported until around 8.5 months actual (7 months adjusted) - and now, at almost 11 months, they still fling themselves backwards sometimes & bonk their heads. i definitely wouldn't worry - they'll get it in their own sweet time.

we're currently in PT for torticollis but the therapist talks about milestones a lot. we've got 33 1/2 weekers and she said she wouldn't be looking for them to sit up unassisted until closer to 8 months actual, and even then she didn't expect them to sit for long periods of time or for us to be able to walk away without expecting them to suddenly topple.

she also said the bumbo was okay in the beginning just to get them up off of their heads but at this point she didn't want them getting too much support that they could lean into. the important thing is to give them practice doing it all on their own muscle strength.

Thanks so much for the feedback. I guess I'll just keep practicing with them and see how it goes.

Mine were 36 weekers and didn't sit unassisted until a few days past 8 months old and that was only for short stints. I think you're fine...those peds sometimes get us worked up over when babies "should" do things (at least they did me, and I learned early on to take it all in stride).

We are in the same boat as you. Our DD's are unable to sit unsupported but we are working with them everyday. I'm finding it gets tiresome hearing family and friends gasp "oh really"? when they find out they are not sitting alone yet. I think it's important for children to develop at their own individual pace. Some pick things up quicker and others need more practice and support. Why is there constant pressure from outsiders (family, friends, etc.) to push our children through milestones as soon as they leave the womb?

Sorry for the mini rant. My family is driving me crazy with comparisons these days.

My DD was 6 weeks premature and didn't sit up till eight months. She crawled a week after. Go figure. ;)

I know I don't post often, but I wanted to add that my boys are also 7 months & they are just starting to sit up. They are not sitting on their own for long at this point. They do the same thing, straighten their legs & they instantly fall over, but we are working on it & I'm sure before long they will be sitting on their own.
