We were without power for two days due to a storm and I lost all the baby food I'd made and stored in the freezer. :cray: So I bought a couple of tubs of sweet potatoes to get us by until I can make some new baby food. I was shocked at how thin it is. The stuff I've been making is much thicker. Is that a problem?

Also, I'd like to try some applesauce, but it seems like a pain to make. Is there any reason I can't just buy a jar of unsweetened applesauce and use that? The actual baby food applesauce is so expensive.

Can I just serve it as is or do I have to puree it more to make it smoother?

The unsweetened applesauce that I find in the store (not homestyle) is smooth enough. Sorry about the baby food!

My girls did well with the thicker consistency. I was shocked by how thin jar food was when I bought some. I had been making all of it also and it is so much thicker.

I read somewhere that when making your own food you will never truly get it to store bought consistency.

If the girls did fine with what you made I think it should be okay. I too had to get some jarred baby food the other day as we knew we were going to be out for the evening and it was easier. I was quite surprised as well between the difference.

For applesauce I use my rice cooker/vegetable steamer. It is a bit of a pain to get the skin off but in all I didn't find it that much different to other foods I have made (oh, after I steam it I puree them of course).

Ohh, how frustrating about your stash! I make my own food too but I have some jars of baby food that I haven't cracked open yet, so I am glad I know what to expect (being runnier)!

I used unsweetened applesauce for the girls. It was smooth enough for them, but if you are concerned just strain it thru a seive (sp?) and then put it back in the container.
