My DD sticks her tongue out ever since she was born, at first it was cute and it still is but I wonder now that she's over 4 mos old if something is wrong with her. She rolls it around in her mouth and bites on it. Not sure if it's too big for her mouth because when she sleeps or is relaxed she doesn't do it.

Sound familiar at all to you?

Mine can be seen doing it on video immediately after birth....she seldom does it now!

Me too! I also have one who thinks her tongue is the coolest source of entertainment! She has been doing it since birth.

Both of my boys did that all the time at birth, now they do it every so often. I've never thought too much about it... probably just an oral fixation?

My two year old did this a lot when he was younger. He's totally normal though.

Meara loves her tongue. Its a pretty long one and she's liked to stick it out from the very beginning. Now she can do some amazing tricks with it flipping it all around. I can't do those things! When she's sitting there with her tongue out, DH and I will just say "Meara, tongue in." and she puts it back in her mouth. Never thought to ask the pedi about it, but she has seen the tricks during our appointment and calls her "Lizard girl!" so she wasn't concerned.

We call Ella "lizard" or "Jordan". Her tongue is ALWAYS OUT! I don't think ( I hope) there is any concern. She seems to be the more perceptive of my twins.

My DS does it alot too. I think it is a toy, he also loves to blow raspberries. I don't think you should worry.

One of mine sticks her tongue out all the time, but the other holds her mouth wide open all the time...I don't know which is more embarrassing! I'm pretty sure that there is nothing wrong. My 3 year old used to open her mouth and raise her arms in the air everytime she got excited...it took her awhile to grow out of it, that was just how she expressed her happiness and excitment.

My advice - take lots of pictures - it'll be fun to embarrass them with them when they're teenagers. :blbl: Ha Ha Ha

Both of my girls did this when they were little. They have very long tongues and it was quiet funny. Every now and then they will still play with them. Sometimes I would joke and say I was going to take them to the dr and see if their tongues was to big for their mouths.

Joel does it too. He loves to stick it out when he smiles especially.

Aubrey our older twin was born with an unusually large tongue and her pedi told us that if her face didn't grow into her tongue that we would have to consider surgery. Well, she is constantly sticking her tongue out even now but her face is growing into her tongue if that makes sense. It no longer looks like her tongue is the first thing you see when you look at her now.

It has taken a few months but we can see an improvement. If you are having serious worries about her tongue talk to your pedi about it and find out the options. I would just say to give it some time. Every picture that we have up until about 2 months ago was with Aubrey's tongue sticking out.

    Lots of love!

My DS has his mouth open a lot, with his tongue hanging out, and lots of drool -- ped thinks that he's just a little behind on oral motor function, meaning the muscles around his mouth seem a little weak. He took a long time to learn to eat off a spoon, and he's not very good at chewing or swallowing.

We practice every day with a straw, and although he can suck the water up without a problem, he spits a lot of it out. But you know, when I've tried with some juice, it's amazing how much of the stuff he drank without spitting, LOL. Clearly he's smarter than I.

A friend of mine is an OT, and she gave me a couple exercises to do. I use an electric toothbrush to massage his bottom lip and cheeks, a few times a day. The vibration is supposed to make his brain aware of those muscles, and get him to focus on using them. I also put just a touch of something sour on his tongue, to make him pucker. (He's 9 months, though -- you wouldn't do this for a very young baby.)

If you are worried, I would ask the ped -- but it's most likely nothing. Our ped wasn't worried at all about Kevan, just said that he's taking a bit longer to develop in that area....
