Ok....So, during my first visit to L&D three weeks ago, they gave the steroid shots since I was experiencing PTL (at 24 weeks). I've read that the effectiveness of the shots lasts up to 4 weeks. So what happens if I go into labor after 28 weeks, but before 37, which is highly likely considering my current state? Will they give me another round of shots? Is this ok for the babies???

First of all...I am sorry that you are going through this! I hope you hold out a while longer!! You can get another round of shots...my Peri said that their is some controversy on multiple rounds.....so check with yours.

I wish you all the best!

I got a round at 24 weeks and another round when I went into the hospital at 28 weeks. My girls were born at 30 weeks and were both on the vent (room air only, no oxygen) for less than 12 hours. I credit the steroids.

I got the steriod shot at 31 weeks. My high risk doctor said I would only recieve the one round of shots, that they don't do multiple rounds.

I would ask your doctor the next time you're in.

Yes, they did for me. When I was admitted to the hospital I had the shots at 24 weeks and then around 28-
So yes. As far as I know, no harm.

It got the steroid shots and 24 and 28 weeks, my girls were born at 28 weeks 1 day and Kylee was only on a vent for a couple of hours and Kaylyn was off by the next day. I also credit the steroid shots. Do they have your contractions under control? GL!

Here are a couple of links to information on the shots and their effects:

The only place I've heard that they last for 4 weeks is a couple of days ago in a post here on Twinstuff. There could have been a change to them but I've always read and been told that 2 weeks from the date of the first shot is the optimal time. The shots make both chemical and physical changes in the babies' lungs. The physical changes will remain after the 2 weeks but the chemical changes will not. It is not recommended to get multiple rounds of shots but some doctors will do it. There is limited evidence on adverse affects to the babies of multiple doses.

I received the shots at 25 weeks and delivered the girls at 35.3 weeks. Ainsley was in the NICU on a vent but Sierra was fine.

I had my shots at 26 weeks. I asked my Peri if I would be getting them again if it looked like I would be going into labor again down the road, she said no. I think it depends on your Dr.
