    Hi ladies,

My girls are 5 months and we started rice cereal last week. I am mixing 1 tbsp of rice cereal with an ounce and a half or so of formula. I'm giving it to them once a day in the mid-morning. My pedi told me to add a second cereal feeding in about three weeks. When do I start fruits/veggies and do I mix the fruit/veggies with the cereal or give it to them after the cereal? I would love to hear what others are doing....

    Thank you!

Im glad you posted this thread--My babes are 5 months too and I was wondering the same thing. I cant remember when my ds1 started--I was thinking around 6 months. They will be 6 months on the 7th, but they seem so little.

I started out with the rice cereal 1x a day for only about a week, then I went to 2x a day (breakfast & dinner).
We started fruits/veggies at 6 months old, which worked great for us. The girls were totally ready by then & they didn't have any hesitation or bad experiences by not being ready :good:
For breakfast I made the cereal (to the consistency they seemed to like) and I added the Stage 1 bananas & they LOVED it. (they still eat oatmeal w/ bananas in it every morning now :) )
I tried to just do veggies in the beginning, besides breakfast, giving about 3 days in between trying something new to make sure there were no food allergies. My thinking was that if they got fruit first then they would never eat the veggies :)
So basically my routine at 6 months was this:
Breakfast: rice cereal w/ pureed bananas in it
    bottle
    Lunch: veggies/fruit/sometimes plain rice cereal
    bottle
    Dinner: veggies/fruit/cereal again
    bottle

    HTH!

My boys started solids immediately with rice cereal mixed with fruits.

    First apples, then bananas...

And then when I was told that I should've started with veggies [so they don't get used to the sweetness of the fruit and reject veggies later] we started with carrots, peas, green beans, sweet potatoes, then squash.

We did four days on each food separately to see if there were any food allergies.

    Ratio:

I pour our rice cereal box into an old Enfamil container and use the same scoop, so that's how I measure...

One scoop rice cereal to one tub Gerber Stage 1 fruits or veggies

It works for us, and my boys love it! They're little eating monsters!

We started solid food at just before 6mnths (a few days shy of 6mnths). I am probably in the minority but I started with veggies instead of cereal, as I thought the veggies might be easier on their stomach, and I did it in the morning in case they did have stomach problems (which they didn't). I started out with just a few bites at the one meal, and gradually increased it. So I did a bunch of veggies first, then moved to oats and rice, then to fruit. Now I mix oats or rice with a jar of fruit in the morning and they love it.

    have fun with it!

We started solids at 6 months also... We only did cereal a week before adding other stuff. I started veggies first but put some fruit in between and just ended up alternating. Now sometimes they get cereal, sometimes they don't (usually oatmeal because rice makes them constipated), but when they do I usually mix it with something and add formula, as DS doesn't like plain cereal. I'm just starting a second meal now... They only had breakfast for a month.

You can mix the veggies in or drop the cereal and feed only veggies. If the ped is suggesting you keep the cereal, I would mix it in :).

You ladies are awesome! Thanks a bunch! I'm very anxious to start fruits/veggies.

Fruits and veggies are a lot of fun! We started w/ veggies first (at our pediatrician's recommendation) and cycled through all the veggies. Then we added a fruit feeding after that, because we did not want them to prefer the fruit over veggies.
