We are supposed to start now, at 5 months. Dr said rice cereal 1x a day then oatmeal then fruits/veggies eventually 2x a day. Been a while so need a refresher. She did not give us any guidelines or anything. How soon after cereal did you start fuits/veggies stage 1? Thanks!

When I first started I just did rice cereal once a day if that. I didnt even do both babies everyday. I waited until they were really consistent before I switched foods or made it part of our daily routine. Once they did, I did oatmeal, barley, then mixed cereal. Then I went to yellow veggies to green veggies and mixed in a fruit once and awhile. I fed the same food for 4 days to make sure there were no allergies. I like the wholesomebabyfood website. We are also in the starting phase. My pedi said to start right away three meals a day, cereal, fruit, veggies or meat- but we started at 6 months. We haven't followed that since we decided to introduce more slowly to avoid shocking their systems. Unfortunately the cereal has been extremely constipating despite very frequent nursing and smaller portions- so we have decided this morning to cut that out and do a fruit for breakfast. We haven't done only one type of food for four days, but introduced no more than one new food every three-four days. I have lots of food allergies, but to be honest I will be more worried when they start eating raw foods. Most foods when cooked/processed are far less likely to cause a reaction.

We started three weeks ago and are just now starting to get into a regular routine of three meals/day at the same times. I do this even if they only want a few spoonfuls just to help their bodies and internal clocks get regular.

At five months old I would think you could probably be a bit more relaxed and feed them as it works for you since their main source of nutrition will still be the BM or formula.

    Happy feeding!

When I started solids with all my babies, I offered a little bit of rice cereal right after their second feeding of the day. For the twins that was 10 am (wakeup/first feeding was 7 am). I gave them their bottles then as soon as they were done did the cereal. Once they were eating a decent amount they weren't as hungry for their 1 pm bottle. That's when I stretched out the feedings from 3 to 4 hours and added the second and third solid feedings. It took about a month to get to that point.
