We have our B/G twins registered to start preschool in Sept (2-day, 2 hr, 2.5 yr old program), but as the start of school gets closer, I'm beginning to worry my son won't be ready. He's still very restless and doesn't sit still for much of anything! He's constantly in motion and gets into anything he can get his hands on!!!

Does anyone have any experience working in a Preschool environment or past experience with a child like this attending school? How does the school handle this type of child/personality? I'm not sure if school will help settle him or they'll say he cannot attend b/c he's too disruptive to the other students.

    Any insight would be appreciated.

    Thanks!!!!

My son's attention span is the same way....NIL! At home, he is always on the go. I can't get him to stick with a project or activity for longer than 2 minutes (no joke). However, when he is in a classroom setting, it is AMAZING the difference. I think it's two fold...(1) the teachers are really good with him and (2) being around other kids his age and seeing what they do and how they act.

You'll never know how he responds until you give it a try. I am sure it will be fine. He won't be the first 2 year old with a short attention span. I am sure the teachers have plenty of experience in this area. Good Luck!!

He sounds like a typical two year old. The teachers are prepared for this. And one of the best ways to help his attention span is to put him in an environment where all eyes are (supposed to be) focused on the teacher/adult. I think you'll be surprised at how well he can adapt.

This is exactly what I was thinking. The preschool teachers deal with all types of kids every day, I bet he will do better than you expect!

That describes several of the Kindergartners I deal with every fall. I'm not joking. Teachers who work in early childhood expect this. I'm sure he will be fine.

Something else to consider is, what sort of program does the school have? The schools I looked around here for 2.9-3.9 years old was mostly "free play" so there isn't much structure that they would need to sit still for. I'm sure he'll be fine!!!

And remember its only for a couple of hours (two wonderful FREE hours!). My girls started just as they turned two (most of the kids in class are 2.5 or older and will be starting the 3 yr old class in the Fall). So my DD's were a bit overwhelmed and cried at first. But now they love it and I love my free time!

We did a 2day 3 hour program starting last fall. I thought no way would my kids be able to do all kinds of things that they were expected to do (Walk in a line, eat at the table, be still for activities), but they did great. I esp worried about DS bc he is my explosive child, but he did great.

You'll be surprised how much the influence from their peers, the direction from other adults and the routine of it all will bring out the best in them. It was such a wonderful experience for us and I can't wait for them to start back in Sept!

GL and try not to worry too much. The hardest part for us was drop off for the first few weeks, but after a few weeks they couldn't wait to see me get out the door so they could have fun with their friends and teachers!
