Is there anyone out there that started milk before a year? I started my son on milk when he was 9 months old, and no ill effects, but that was 11 years ago. Just curious if there are any of you that will or have started before a year?

I think they're supposed to stay on formula and/or breastmilk for the first year. Cow's milk isn't as nutritious, and the earlier you start it, the more likely they are to develop an allergy.

We'll start transitioning (mixing) at 11 months so that they'll be off at 12 months. Did the same with my oldest. No allergies in our family.

Our pedi had us start giving milk to N&M at about 9-10 months. I am sure he will do the same at our next appt with Liam (his 9 mos appt).

My first two kids switched at a year, per peds recommendation. But with Josh and the twins, the recommendation was 9 months! So we did!

At started weaning from formula to milk at 11mos., and now we're almost completely on cow's milk.

It is recommended that they not start formula early for many reasons... I believe one of them is the high sodium content and difficulty in their body processing it? Check WebMd.. they probably have the answer.

My ped said to have formula/bm be their #1 source of nutrition until a year. But I've been putting milk in a sippy from about 10 months and offering it with meals. Jordan loves it and Mackenzie hates it. They are only on 3 bottles a day and are weaning the mid day one out by themselves.

I am so glad I saw this post because my MIL is insisting then when the twins turn 6 months that I need to breastfeed 2 feedings and then the third one needs to be whole milk only. She is from India where milk is the most important thing and I understand that she raised babies 30 years ago over there. I am just wondering how I am going to tell her that they will not have milk until the pedi tells me it is okay. She already said don't listen to the dr's. I did all the reading/research of how it is not nutritous enough and has high sodium etc.

I'm sure it won't be the last time that you have to figure out how to politely disregard someone's well-intentioned (but totally loony) advice! Welcome to motherhood...

That's what we did. I know my friend tried at 9 months or so but her son's system wasn't ready to handle it and he was pooping like 6 times a day and got a horrible diaper rash! She waited until 12 months and he did much better. I think it's best if you discuss it with your ped. Perhaps he/she will give you go ahead to try it. I know this formula stuff is rediculously expensive. I couldn't wait to get my girls on real milk. So much cheaper and easier to get.

I started my son on milk at 11 months. I started with a little mixed in with formula and put in more milk and less formula as he got closer to 1. I also started giving him a sippy cup half the time. I got rid of formula and the bottle the day before he turned one.

This is what we did too. Good luck with your decision!

We were at our 9 month appt yesterday and the Ped said that whole milk can interfere with the iron absorbtion process and that they should not have it until a year. So interesting all of the different schools of thought from doctors and parents. I guess what it comes down to most of the time is what do you think is best. Ahh parenthood. We are not in any rush since I have one with a milk allergy so we will wait until a year.
