Well we started with cereal on friday and last night I gave them bananas. They didn't seem to care for them. Does anybody think maybe the new flavor just stunned them. I thought all babies loved bananas. What were some of the first foods your babies liked. What helps to keep them regular when you start feeding solids. & when do they stop pushing all the food out of their mouth? DD1 seems to do a little better than DD2. I have to say too that my oldest was with me when I was feeding them and it was so cute... I gave them the bananas and they kept letting it all run out and she said mom stop making them eat it they don't like it. I guess she was sticking up for her lil sissies... I noticed last night too that they started trying to grab the spoon. I guess that is just part of it right? Any suggestions.

    Thanks
    Missy

We did all the different cereals and they seemed to enjoy those. But Bananas was not a good thing the first time we tried it either. My DD looked like she had sucked a sour lemon and was not impressed. But the next time she got it she loved it and has ever since.
Applesauce was another hit at our house along with pears.

I was a Nanny for twin girls before having my twins and I remember they loved sweet potatoes and pears!

Ours don't care for bananas either. Keep sneaking them in though, they may change their minds. Our love carrots, peas, and pears in particular. Those carrots are a favorite!

Thanks for all the replies ladies. Everyone here is such a big help. I was also going to ask can I give them oatmeal cereal instead of rice cereal? I have heard it is better to keep them from getting constipated.

We haven't tried bananas yet, but I do remember my pediatrician mentioning it takes up to 20 "tries" with a food before a baby really develops a like or a dislike. Before that, they're just reacting to the newness. So maybe try bananas again in a few days?

I would go with something like sweet potatoes on your next try. My kids didn't care for bananas right away, it was an acquired taste!

As far as the cereal, yes you can give oatmeal, but watch out, too much(which wasn't a whole lot for my babies!) will make them gassy and poop a lot!

It honestly takes Evan about 5 tries to like anything - even apple sauce! He just gets thrown off by new things. He always looks at me as if to say "What?! There's ANOTHER new food in the world?!" Bananas weren't a hit around here until I mashed them into a paste. I also baked them and then mashed them a couple of times - that was a hit too.

My ped said to start with rice cereal, which I did but they really didn't like it. I tasted it myself and I didn't blame them for crying over it - yuck!

So I've abandoned the cereal for now and just do a veggie at night. The doctor said to start with a green veg first, then yellow, then orange. She said that if I started with fruit, they would be less likely to eat the veggies since the fruit is sweeter. We started with green beans for a week, then peas for another week, now we are on to squash - which is the favorite so far, though the little one really liked peas. Once they have gotten through all the veggies, I'll start giving them cereal with fruit for breakfast - in addition to their morning bottle.

Like a pp said, it can take over 10 tries for them to actually decide if they like a new food. Just keep trying. :) With fruits, I liked to mix in a little cereal to cut down on the sweetness and add a few more vitamins.

If they keep spitting the food out after a few days, it's okay to wait to introduce solids. The AAP recommendation is at least 6 months, not by 6 months. We introduced the girls to solids at 6 months and Dax at 3 months so it really depends on the family and the baby. Even now, Dax gets 95% of his nutrition from breastmilk and he's a huge kid. Good luck!

My girls make the funniest faces if we give them straight bananas. We started with veggies and then went to fruits so I think its very sweet for them. I usually mix it with oatmeal and formula and then they gobble it up.

And to answer you original question, we started with plain rice (didn't go over great) and then sweet potatoes... that started a love affair that is still alive and well in our house!

Mine much preferred oatmeal to rice cereal.

To avoid constipation/diarrhea extremes, I just tried to balance the foods. Bananas, carrots, and sweet potatoes (as well as rice cereal) were constipating for my boys. So I offered one of those one day (after they'd been through the 3-4 day trial to see if there was an allergy) and then would offer the nonconstipating stuff every other day (stuff like pears, prunes, green beans, peas, squash).

My boys favorites when starting out were bananas, sweet peas, prunes, and squash.

mine hated nanners at first... We just at 6.5 months tried again and OMG look out they love them. i think it was too thick to be honest... Mine loved sweet taters, squash and carrots... I stuck with all veggies first and then added fruits after they built a strong like for their veggies... we dont eat alot of greens it makes them gassy but they like them... Fruits they love pears and applesauce...
