I wanted to ask your opinion. I am starting to think about potty training the girls in the next couple of months and thinking about supplies. I had originally thought about buying 'potties' but then I saw they have just potty seats that sit on top of the regular seat. Now the downside is they can't both go at the same time just using the seat over the regular toilet and having to take the seat on and off. The downside of the potties is our downstairs bathroom is fairly small. What did you use?

We have the Baby Bjorn potty seats. A couple weeks ago I decided I was going to make a serious attempt at PTing my girls. And although I think they are both smart enough to understand when they need to use the restroom, and they were both showing signs of PTing readiness, it was way too much work!! At this age, they need help every step of the way, and to watch both of them to avoid accidents was just too much for me. I decided to wait until they are a bit older and can do it a little more independently. GL!!

We haven't started yet, but we bought two potties. I think one will want to go when she sees the other going. The ones we bought have a removeable seat so they can be put on the big toilet when you want to transition them there. We have a small bathroom too and I think we'll just deal with it for the potty training time.

we also bought 2 potties because I dont think they are goign to want to share the big one. Our bathroom (off the living room/their room) is tiny and we still manage to have the potties in there.

We have both. I like the potty seats though because I can bring them outside with us (where the beginning stages of PT'ing started!), and I can also leave one in my van when we go places. I also have two seats that fit over the adult toilet, but it will be a long time before they can use those independently. GL!

ETA: The seats we have are the Bjorn's and I love them! Very easy to clean and they don't take up much room.

We have not started potty training yet but we did buy two separate potties and DD's "potty", has the seat that comes off and can be used on the big potty if need be. Right now we are just teaching them to sit and they are not showing any signs of potty readiness at all.

Thanks for all the replies ladies. I think I will go with the big potties vs seats based on the responses I received. I still think it will be a while before I attempt to potty train. Only one is showing any signs at this point. While I am thinking about it, how did you clean out the potties between uses? I know you can empty the pee into the regular toilet. Did you just rinse it out after? Used cleaners?

I dump in the toilet, rinse in the bath, and then once a day wipe them down with a clorox wipe. We've only had a couple of poops so far (PTing is a work in progress around here!), but for poop- dump, clorox, rinse. Probably more info than you needed this morning :D

This is what we do but we haven't had any poop in the potty yet!

I also highly recommend the baby bjorn potty chair (the seat I think is just the smaller version but the chair is not big at all) because it's easy to use, no fuss, easy to clean, etc.

My boys are not fond of the commode and have freaked out when we've tried to put them on there so for now we use the potty chairs.

We had two little potties, two seats, and two step stools. I put the little potties in their play area and they used the seats & stools in the bathrooms (one upstairs, one down). They used both types of seat and didn't seem to have a strong preference. There were many times I was glad they could sit at the same time because they poop at the same time nearly every time. Now that they're older, they are able to hold it long enough for one to run to another bathroom if his brother is using the closest one BUT we have had more than one shared toilet experience in single-stall public restrooms. You do what you have to do.

ETA: for cleaning, we'd dump pee in the toilet, put a little water in the pot and then dump that too. For poop, I disinfected with Pinesol (we have septic and try to limit bleach use). Remember that pee is sterile so you don't need to go crazy with the cleaner.
