Staples and Disolvable Stitches

Hello ladies, I thought I'd post this question over here before I go into labor.

I may be getting a c-section and thought I had decided on disolvable stitches. Well, my doc told me today that there's more scarring with disolvable stitches than with staples.

So, for those that have experience with this, could you please share how your scar has healed? He says with staples it tends to turn the edge down more, so less scarring.

Any info you have is greatly appreciated. :)

I remember seeing a post recently about this, I think most people said that they felt scaring would be less with stitches. But, I had staples, and my scar seems fine, I mean its still red and you can definitely see it, so maybe stitches would have been better. Sorry, I am not much help.

I had stiches and steri-strips, and pretty much have no visible scar. But I would go with what your dr. says since they are the one doing the procedure and who has the most experience.

I've had two c-sections - one with the dissolvable stitches and one with surgical glue. I've had a visible red scar with each. I think a lot depends on the individual. My doc said some people are just more prone to forming scar tissue, regardless of the method used to close.

I had dissolvable with steri-strips and I have minimal scaring. Its was red at first but 19 months later it has faded quite nicely. Good luck with your delivery.

I had staples. To my great surprise when I was trying to find the scar from my first one about 4 years later, I could barely see it. I had staples with the second and it was also barely noticeable.

I cut my forehead when I was 5 and had stitches. That scar is quite visible, but I've had it 35 years, so I rarely think about it. I don't care at all about my c/s scar, because who sees that? And even if someone does, wouldn't it be pretty nervy of them to look down on me for it? Once the baby came the idea of the scar just dropped right out of my mind and I pretty much never thought about it again (which is why I lost it and didn't know where it was!).

    GL on a smooth delivery.

With my first ab surgery (not a c-section, though it was the same type of incision), I had staples. The scar was pretty big and noticeable, though it faded from red to purple to pink and almost white over the course of 3ish years.

They went right through the scar for the c-section incision, though the c-section one isn't as long, and closed up with dissolvable stitches. The c-section scar is thinner than the staples scar was - so now I have a thin scar most of the way across with wider ends left over from the first surgery.

I prefer how it looks now to how it did after the staples. I'm sure it varies with each person and doctor, though.

I had stiches and steristrips, and my scar is pretty flat. It's still red; but my boys are only 4 mo old. It is definitely improving noticeably over time. No complaints here; but I don't have staple experience to compare. Congratulations and good luck with your delivery!

I had staples and you cannot even find my scar 1 year later. On the left side 1 staple got irritated a lot and you can see 2 little pink dots still. That is all.

My incision was on my left side not in the center like most.

    Congrats!

I must have had disolvable stitches because I didn't have to do anything with my incision, I just had tape over it until I left the hospital. A year later the scar is the same color as my skin and about 3 inches long. You can't really even see it unless you look closely, it is so low that it is covered by even my skimpiest underwear ( not that I've been wearing those a whole lot lately  ).

I had staples for my c-section and had a lot of issues with them. I had staples come out and cause a gap in my incision that didn't close for over 4 weeks. Staples came loose and were poking into the skin around the incision and the incision itself. A lot of my post-op pain was from the staples-it hurt like heck every time I moved and they poked into me. I would never let anyone use staples on me again if I have to have another surgery. Just my 2 cents!

    Thanks ladies.

My doc said I could have either one, no problem, so he's giving me the choice.

He just said he has better results with staples than stitches, but he'll let me decide what I want to do. Maybe he's just better at placing the staples than stitches?

I really don't know what to do now, lol!

I had staples with my first c-section and stitches with the twins...I am 3 weeks 3 days post c-section and my stitches have healed completely and there is no red...It is a fine scar. The staples seemed to heal much slower and was red and ugly for months. It eventually healed fine though.

I had staples, and my scar is still very red, 6 months later. I think my doc did a little freebie tummy tuck while she was in there though, so I don't know if that made a difference.

Rachel, it's good to see you here--I'm one of your many flickr fans. :)

Funny, I never cared about my scarring. If you saw all the stretch marks on my belly, you'd know that this belly will NEVER see the light of day again, thus not caring what my csection scar looked like. Well, that & it's so low that no one sees it anyway. That being said, I had staples. The doc removed them the day I left the hospital (so 4 days post op) & then I had steri strips. 1 yr post op & you can't even see the scar. Funny, I had to LIFT my twin skin to look to see if I could still see it, so even if it were bright red, my skin covers it & I don't have to worry LOL :)!

I'm a nurse & have seen many people heal great with staples. Stitches tend to to be used on more tender skin areas, like the face, but otherwise, it's rare to see stitches at all (maybe each doc has a preferance & all ours prefer staples?). When I had a breast reduction (by a plastic surgeon), I had stitches & my scar is FAR WORSE than my csection...and it's almost 5 yrs old.

Like someone said, I think it depends on the person. Good luck with your delivery.

The medical literature shows that healing and scarring is exactly the same with stitches versus staples so I say go with whatever your doctor prefers. It's very easy to do staples, stitching is more of an art so if he doesn't do it very much it may come out uglier.

I had a major knee surgery with disolvable stitches and I had the same exact scar as I had with my c-section in which staples were used. I only had more little scars b/c everywhere a staple was it left a tiny scar. My body tends to overheal itself and my scars are not pretty at all, but I really don't think that has to do with stitches or staples.

Thanks ladies. I sure wish my doc had more positive things to say about the stitches, it sounds like that's what worked best for you all. :)

Rachel (sesame ellis), I see you're into photography...do you do it professionally? I checked out your flickr link and you have some great stuff! I ask because I'm also a photographer, and do it professionally. I'm taking a break for many months due to the twin pregnancy though. Here's my flickr if you're interested in checking out some pics. :) http://www.flickr.com/photos/8728518@N03/
