UGH. DS has skipped 2 naps today (and I pray we're not going to have 3 for 3!!!), because he pulled himself up to standing in his crib and either couldn't or wouldn't get down. He screamed his head off the whole time. Not just fussing, full-blown screaming.

I know we shouldn't go to him, and should just let him work it out for himself, but this is totally grueling. How long did your twins take to get over this phase?

If you go in and lay him back down, does he just stand up again?

My older one did things in approximately two-week phases....sit up and can't get back down, stand up and can't get back down.....and then it progresses to things like, throw all my stuffed animals out of the crib, and now I'm lonely.

I would probably lay him back down a handful of times, and tell him in no uncertain terms that it's time to go to sleep (and sign sleep several times, if you're doing that one) -- and then hope that he gets tired of it and gives up!

Fun phase, isn't it? <_< That lasted about two weeks with my two. I hope it's a quicker phase for you guys.

I remember this so specifically with my first son. He would get stuck standing up, and then we'd play the lay-him-back-down-watch-him-pop-back-up-game forever. It was so annoying! When Lincoln started doing it, I nipped it in the bud. I did CIO everytime he did it, and it stopped within a day or two. In my experience with my oldest it took weeks and weeks for him to stop it...but just a day or two for Lincoln letting him work it out on his own. I wish there were an easier answer!

I asked exactly this question last week, and I am listening now as Tom works out how to get down...he knows how, actually, but he seems to forget or just doesn't want to at nap time. Actually, I think he's just so excited about all his new skills that his brain won't shut down.

Anyway, the most frequent pattern seems to be that he stands and plays for a while, then he gets tired and starts screaming, and that's when I go in to lay him down. When he's tired out he doesn't pop back up again...or he hasn't yet. It took Tom about 5 days to figure out how to get down when he's awake.

This is really driving me crazy, actually. Naps are becoming a circus, and I think part of it is that Tom is ready to drop to 2 naps and Jack isn't...but I'm getting way OT...

Well until they learned to bend their knees or in Jack's case just flop himself down, I had to go in and lay them back down. I really think it is because they don't know how to bend their knees yet. As soon as they figured that out maybe a week and a half or two weeks at the most, they were able to fall asleep again. I would usually let them cry for about 5 minutes and then go in. It really didn't last too long though.

when jake first figured out how to get down, he spent 10 minutes working his way around the crib, standing up and letting go and it was hysterical!!! He will figure it out!

It was about a 2 week phase for us. They could always get down, they were just having too much fun reciting War and Peace to each other. :winking0009:

We're at the let's throw everything out of the crib, particularly our blankie and then get really mad phase right now.

    Fun stuff...

The sitting up crying phase last about a week...the standing up, can't get back down lasted about a week. When we went through it, I'd let them CIO for about 10 min...lay back down one time and then just let them CIO from there on.

I think we're past the worst part- where they just scream b/c they can't get down. NOw it's a "if I'm standing, I'm not sleeping, and I don't want to sleep" phase. Thankfully they USUALLY get themselves down and go to sleep but it may take awhile. THe worst part is if ONE of them is up, even if the other is dead tired, he'll stand up to "talk" with his brother. But I'd say the worst part only took about 2 weeks to get through. Now I just have to keep laying them down and reminding them that it's nap time. (which as a matter of fact, I need to do right now... :p )

    Thanks for all the advice!

Whew. Today was much better. He stood himself up when I put him down for his first nap. I let him get good and mad and tire himself out yelling, then went and laid him back down. He stayed down and got a good nap! 2nd nap he slept a bit, then stood up, and I did the same thing and he slept some more. 3rd nap he just went to sleep and stayed asleep.

AHHHHHH. I hope this sticks (and he doesn't turn it into a game!).
