Does anyones children have stainless steel crowns? Thoughts? opinions? I just came from the peds dentist and was appalled to find out that my child require three of these. What a HORRIBLE parent I am!!! Any advice would be GREAT!
My sister had like 11 or 12 on her baby teeth. But that was in the 80's. Is there a reason you're looking at the silver and not the enamel colored?
First of all, you're not a horrible parent at all! I had several cavities as a kid and I had a silver crown - early 90's. But, knock on wood, have had only one cavity since my adult teeth came in. Hopefully this is a one-time thing for your lo or just a baby-teeth thing. Is there any way you can look into the enamel colored ones? Even as a little kid, I know I would have preferred that. Good luck!
I've read that BPA is present in those enamel-colored crowns. I would investigate that more before putting them in my kids' mouths.
I know it's a lot of extra work, but is there any way you can get a second opinion? Crowns require the removal of the majority of the tooth (they hollow it out) and may expose it enough to other issues like a root canal. I don't want to worry you but I worked with dentists (good and bad ones) for years while in college. Also, cavities have nothing to do with you!! I've NEVER had a cavity and my sisters have several each! GL!
The dentist said today that they only use stainless steel for saftey reasons. I appreciate everyones responses, makes me feel better as a parent. I have really been beating myself up over this!
Jayden has MANY crowns. He had to get most of his rear baby teeth crowned because for some reason they just all went bad. Jesse's were fine though .. so I think it just happens. Don't feel bad ! They actually put him to sleep because they had to do so many .. so I just had them do it all at once.
Don't feel bad at all! My girls' back teeth came in with basically no enamel. The dentist said it was not because of anything we did/didn't do it just happens. He is talking about capping them. We go back in December and will find out then...
My girls have soft enamel. If they use the regular filling mixture there is a large chance of them coming out. Jessy had 2 capped with silver after having the normal filling fall out. This could have been avoided if they'd used the silver to begin with.
Ditto this. One of my DDs has a steel crown. She had it 'filled' with white and after a year it not only fell out, but also developed a huge crack under the original filling and cracked. Our dentist will not do white fillings on anything but front teeth for kiddos due to the fact thaty they do not last as long or as durable.
You are not a bad parent. Cavities happen. We only put stainless on our kids back baby teeth one thing they are a good bit cheaper - if it was a front tooth I would use the enamel colored but for a back baby tooth? Our insurance covers stainless so that is what we do. Baby teeth hold the place of adult teeth so it is important to keep them in and not extract them early if at all possible. IMO stainless crowns for back baby teeth are the way to go when a crown is recommended.
One of my boys had four cavities filled this past spring. I took him to 3 different dentists and they all suggested using the stainless instead of the white enamel stuff, mainly for cost. The white costs more and there's no point in spending more money on teeth that are honestly just going to fall out anyway. My son didn't get full crowns, they were cavities in between his molars, but they are still noticeable when he talks. Kinda sucks, but it was a huge price difference.
