Ok, so this year Madeline is in Girl Scouts and currently Connor isn't participating in anything. They just brought home papers from school about football/cheerleading which they both want to do. I got the OK for Connor to play flag football so I have that covered. In the Fall Madeline wants to do Girl Scouts again and Connor wants to join Boy Scouts.

Does anyone have any suggestion that will help me from being overwhelmed with their activities/ sports and school schedules? :umm: I will be the one taking them to everything since their father doesn't live in the area.

Sorry, I am totally overwhelmed with my kid's activities and my little ones haven't even started yet.

I do limit them to 1 thing each, each season.
    so far:
Dd does soccer all year round and ds does soccer in Fall swimming in Spring.

We also try to limit to one sport per season, but we also do scouts. Boy scouts meet at night, and they are required to have a parent attend with them, although siblings are also welcome. That is tough as you are one parent with a boy and a girl--cub scouts require much more parent participation than brownies, and girl scouts.

I was thinking about that too- limiting what they can participate in, but for Girl Scouts anyway there is very little to it- a meeting once a week. Boy Scouts I'm not sure what happens with that, but scouts won't start in the Fall until late September/ early October and football will be almost over by then. I guess I can give it a shot and see how it goes.

    Thanks Alison!

I don't have any issue on going to scouts with them, I do it now with Maddie. I do know it will be different than girl scouts but maybe this will work. :) Thanks!

I am the wrong person to ask. Right now the twins are in soccer (2 days), swimming and gymnastics. Peyton is in dance, soccer, swim and gymnastics. And DH is either in Texas working, or at home working, so I bring them to most everything myself too. It is a lot, and can be a pain, but they really enjoy them all.

Thanks Heather! It's nice to know that other people can handle multiple activities with 2 (or more!) kids. :)

Dani, I don't know if scouts is like this everywhere, but the meetings tend to start at 7 pm, since it is mostly dads, they do it after work hours. The advantage is that it doesn't conflict with anything else.

My boys also do Hebrew School on Sunday mornings, so I try to limit other activities because that is non-negotiable :)

Crap, I just typed out a long reply & lost it :grr:

I will try to remember what the heck I all put.

I think each kid can handle different amounts of activity & should be allowed to participate if it works for the family.

Our family :db: policy :db: per sae is that:
    • if they want to
    • if it won't make the family schedule too crazy
    • if we can afford it
then we are happy to do it. :good:

Our year is going something like this.
    1. DS - swimming, Jr Curling & fencing classes in the fall session. Scouts all year.
    2. DD - Swimming & Jr Curling in the fall. Piano, Choir & Youth Group all year.
    3. DS - swimming & Jr Curling in the fall. Baseball in the spring. Beavers all year.
    4. DS - swimming in the fall. Soccer in the spring.
    5. DD - swimming in the fall. Soccer in the spring. Ballet all year.
The 4 youngest usually take gymnastics and will start again in the fall as the club has a new coach.

Dh works out of town (2 wks in, 2 wks out) & I always plan our schedule as though he is out of town. I have to be able to handle it myself.

ETA - this looks like a lot, but not all are time intensive.

Thanks guys. :) I appreciate all the input. Thanks Sharon for the info on scouts, with it starting that late I don't know if we can swing it. Connor is pretty set with bedtime being at 8pm (I know it sounds strange) but once he hits that wall he is out cold! LOL I will find out what the troops around here do for boy scouts.

You are right to check around. Our Beavers (ages 5-7) as well as Cubs (8-10) go 6:30 - 7:30. Our Scouts (11+) are 6:30 - 8:00.

We limit it for our own sanity.

This time of year, all three boys are playing baseball. Jackson's practices are T, Th, and Sun. Hayden and Brady's are W and Sat. In a few weeks, they will start having 2-3 games per week, all the way through July, and the fields are a good 20 minute drive from here. We have resigned ourselves to the fact that we will not have a life for a couple months, but baseball is our family's "thing," and we welcome the season! Even so, we purposefully picked a league that does not do out-of-town tournaments. That gets insane!

Other than that, Jackson has guitar lessons (only because we could change them to Sunday night, which doesn't interfere with any games or practices) and I'm teaching Hayden and Brady piano, so that's flexible. The boys all played basketball in the winter, so again, there was no interference.

It wouldn't be possible for us to add any evening activities this time of year. We'll do swimming lessons in summer, but that's daytime.

I honestly wish I would've limited a LONG time ago. My DH travels a lot, but I do have some help, so it's a little different from you.

My oldest does soccer & church. Soccer is 2x a week, with a game on Saturday. Church is 2x a week. Add to this all the clubs she's in, and you're guaranteed at least 2 afterschool meetings. Not to mention, she has a very active social life.

My 11yo is a gymnast, and she trains 5 days a week. She goes directly afterschool and works out until 7. This one is the biggest pain, because her gym is 25 miles away, one way.

The little girls are in ballet once a week. They keep asking to do more -- gymnastics, swimming, soccer, etc. - but I told them they have to pick ONE. I seriously would go crazy, not to mention broke, doing everything. Once we finish ballet (their recital is in May), then they both want to do something else. My luck, they won't agree on the next sport, so there will just be that much more driving! It's crazy!
