Not that it really matters, but out of curiosity, does anyone know if "they" keep track of what the percentage of twins are spontaneously/naturally conceived versus conceived with the help of fertility drugs/IVF/etc.?

Spontaneous fraternal twins, no family history and no maternal age (35+). You better make a poll if you want to get some "Twinstuff" statistics.

I don't really know who "they" are either...I guess the medical community? Just curious if there was some kind of breakdown...with the rise in fertility treatments, the rate of multiples has risen...I was just wondering if there was some estimate of a break down of what the twin rate was for each type. Again, not that it matters, just curious...

(mine were conceived via good old fashioned sex...and boy were we shocked!)

Hi! Mine are di/di fraternals, boy and girl. They were conceived the old fashioned way..... I am 34, so this may have added to my chances.

I haven't seen an actual breakdown w/ figures - would be interesting, tho. Pretty much everything I've read says that frat twins odds are affected by fert treatments, maternal age, ethnicity, genetic history of multiples, and other things. They are also more common than ID twins. ID twins - "they" say - are more of a medical mystery that just kind of "happen." "They" have no clear answers why some eggs split. But I've seen plenty of women here w/ twins who have multiples in their family history, so who knows.

As for me and mine - POOF! Spontaneous as can be mono/di.

    Good question.

I don't think so because I did not have to fill anything out like that (meaning how they were conceived) when my twins were born, so not sure how "they" could.

    I have spontaneous frats. .

I have been thinking about this same thing lately. . .How many sets of twins are spontaneous these days?

It seems like quite a few from the answers here.

DH & I were wondering about this the other day. Lots of spontaneous twins it seems. We were "guessing" that fertility treatment mamas accounted for more than 50%.

As for us? We've got IVF fraternals on the way! :)

Each RE clinic keeps its own records or stats.
But even those records are flawed.
For example: let's say I do an IVF cycle with my RE and he confirm two heartbeats and releases me to my OB. Let's say at some point during the pregnancy one twin does not survive, leaving a single birth. The RE stats (unless I call to tell him otherwise) will reflect a live twin birth, and the OB's record will reflect a live singleton birth.

Compound this with the fact that some women may not tell their OB that they had assitance - I know it sounds impossible and stupid but stuff like this does happen.

    So you'd really never know.

Also, if THEY (probably the Bureau of Vital Statistics) took some sort of national poll (which right off the bat is not only impossible but incredibly flawed) a whole bunch of people would lie and say they were spontaneous when they actually were 'assisted'.

Still too much of a stigma, although I don't understand why....

So I say take any poll with a grain of salt - it depends on the data - garbage in, garbage out, KWIM?
But it's still a good question that I'd be interested in knowing the REAL answer to!!

Mine were concieved on the pill too! I think it had something to do with the egg splitting. But yours obviously aren't identical so I don't know. I guess God just has his plan

I have heard that identical twins are spontaneous and fraternal twins are genetic which explains why I have no twins in my family and I'm having mono/di girls.

My daughter is expecting fraternal twins. She did have fertility treatment but not IVF. She took femara, Gonal F injections and doctor administered HCG trigger shot to stimulate ovulation and then they were told to have "Old Fashioned Sex" Lol!!

Here are some stats that I am aware of

1/90 -Pregnancies result in fraternal twins w/o fertility meds
1/250 - Pregnancies result in identical twins with or w/o fertility meds

1 in every 30 pregnanices now results in twins and this is due to medical advancements in reproductive technology. The number of pregnancies that results in identical twins has remained the same as this has nothing to due with medication/IUI/IVF etc.

Fraternals are not necessarily genetic. I have spontaneous frats with no family history of twins.
