Spontaneous labor after twin C-Section

I haven't posted much recently, but somehow I've arrived at 39+5 weeks.

I was hoping for a VBAC (I had to deliver the twins quickly at 38 weeks because of Cholestasis and since they won't induce twins here I had a c-section). But at my doctor's appointment today he felt that it was unlikely that I would enter labor spontaneously if I didn't before, with nearly 13 lb of twins. My feeling is, they may have been big enough, but maybe they just weren't totally ready. But he seemed to be saying that it depends on the size of the baby in the uterus.

So my question is whether any of you did / did not spontaneously go into labour with your subsequent baby even if you didn't with the twins?

    Many thanks

There are so many factors that go into labor - size isn't always the trigger. They think it's a combination of hormones, your body being ready and something the baby gives off that starts labor. Heck, if size were the only trigger no one would go into preterm labor and then carry a full term baby. I know many people that had full term inductions and then went into spontaneous labor. There is definitely hope! Have you been trying any natural ways to start labor?

Many thanks. I remember you from the expecting twins forum in 2005/2006 - I think our babies were originally due around the same time.

It's nice to have a more positive perspective. I had felt rather down after the dr visit today. But when I think about it, you must be right about weight not being the only issue.

I plan to try some natural induction methods (well just breast stimulation for now as that seems to be safe and reasonably reliable) but not until after the weekend - my own dates put me a couple of days behind the dr and I wouldn't like to hurry her out before she's ready.

    Anyway, many thanks.

baby's weight has very little to do with when labour starts. it's kind of an odd thing for your doctor to say. :unknw: as PP said, labour gets going due to a cocktail of hormones, including one released by babe's lungs when she's ready to be born. everybody goes into labour spontaneously at some point, it's just whether or not it happens on a timeline that's "acceptable" to your doctor.

here's a review from the Cochrane Database on routine induction for post date pregnancies.

Thank you, that's a very useful summary. I also had a look at the ACOG (american college of obstetrics etc) and RCOG (royal college etc - uk version) guidelines. Feeling happier now. Official due date tomorrow. Lost plug yesterday night, but nothing happening ... yet.

I felt like my son wasn't gonna come either and went into spontaneous (and quick) labor 4 days before my due date. And aside from the twins, who were early, this was my smallest baby. Weight played no part. Hang in there Mama I'm pulling for ya! :youcandoit:

I went to almost 41 weeks with our girl and went into labor on my own (after c-sec with the boys). I hope it's happening soon for you!! Just as an encouraging sidebar -- the delivery was the most wonderful part of the pregnancy, so I hope you can enjoy!!
    Best of luck!

If weight was the issue then noone would ever go into premature labor, would they??

To answer your question, I've gone into labor since my twin section.

Many thanks for all your encouragement. I'm feeling much more positive now. I even have a feeling she might be born before the weekend.
