My daughter is 8 weeks old and spits up A LOT! My pedi doesn't think there is anything wrong (no colic, reflux). I was wondering if anyone has put a little cereal in the bottle to thicken it up for a baby that spits up a lot. I only ask because Enfamil has a formula for babies that spit up a lot that includes rice starch. I was going to try to put her on that. I know it is super expensive, but it seems to me that adding a little rice cereal to the bottle would be the same thing. What do you think? My only concern is the allergy thing that could develop if you give your baby cereal before 4 months.

All of my babies have had reflux, and have all gotten cereal in their bottles pretty much from birth! No problems. You will have to get a faster flow nipple. You can also put the cereal in the blender to make it finer. Also, the Beechnut brand rice cereal seems to work the best, as the flakes are smaller and seem to dissolve better.

The Enfamil with AR is a bit different than just adding the rice cereal. The rice in it is just the starch and is broken down a little more.

My babies were on soy formula, so the Enfamil AR was not an option for us.

    Good luck!! :hug99:

DS was a preemie and spit quite a bit , in the hospital they had him on NeoSure, but when he came out and all that formula was gone, I moved him to Enfamil Lipil Gentlease (actually used the Target brand of it) and he did much better on it, it's broken down proteins to help him digest more of it than to have so much spit out. We stayed on that for 8 months and now just use the Target Brand of the Enfamil Lipil regular formula.

I used/use oatmeal, rice bound them up too much. They boys actually threw up without it. They are on Enfacare (neosure equivalent) and I cant get them to take anything else yet, makes them gassy. Dr hasnt taken them off it yet either. She told us when the time comes to try good start. I had to supplement gentle ease one time and it made them so gassy, thats why she recommended the GS.

My pediatrician actually suggested we had a bit of rice cereal to DS's formula to help with him spitting up and it has helped. He also seems to be full for a bit longer.

Try it! I thought it worked wonders for spitting up. Too bad my girls got constipated from rice. The chances of a baby being allergic to rice are very low so I wouldn't worry about that.

I wanted to add that I tried oatmeal to help with the bit of constipation that they were having and it made them horrible gassy and have diarrhea. You just have to experiment. I would recommend going with the rice first though, since it has the least likelyhood of an allergic reaction.

We used Enfamil AR for months!! My guys did WONDERFULLY on it. Before getting on that, they spit up after every single meal and we had to hold them upright for 30 minutes! It is kinda expensive but give it a try. I liked it!
