Spitting Up

    OK, this maybe a bit of a rant also. Since day one my LO's have been major spitters. We are talking waterfalls! When people hold them I have to caution that they are spitters. People look at me like 'what's a little spit up'. Then they will spit up all down the front of their clothes and then they look at me like how could I let my baby spit up all over them. (I do give them a blanket to cover themselves but my LO's always seem to be able to find the exposed clothing).

    I realized at about 2 months that my LO's just really like to eat. Especially my DD. She will eat and eat and eat. She just really likes to suck on the bottle. So now, I give her 6oz at a feeding and when she cries when she's done, I pop a soother in and she's happy.

    And not only do they like to have their bottles, they also really like solids. So now, I have colored spit up- fun fun! They say that a baby will let you know when it's full- that has never happened with my LO's. I just stop when I think they have had enough. Just for lunch today they shared 2 small squares of banana bread, 1 egg yoke with cheese, 4 fruit cubes with a tablespoon of yogurt, and they would have kept going!! I also give them 3 6oz bottles and an 8oz bottle at night.

    So I'm just wondering, am I feeding them too much or are they just spitters?? And when does the spitting up stop?

    Sounds like you have good eaters!! For us, the spitting up stopped when they started walking and gravity helped hold it down. Are they happy spitters? Do they seem like its causing them any discomfort? Any grunting at all?

    I don't know if you can overfeed a baby. I never limited the amount of food my girls got, but that's just me. They always let me know when they were full. Maybe they are going through a growth spurt and need those extra calories. Their growth is exponential in the first year.

    Good Luck!!

    All 5 of my kids were spitters to varying degrees. I always gave my kids as much as they wanted. With the twins, the spit up stopped around 9 months for Emma, and 14 months for Jake. Emma wasn't much of a spitter, but Jake was.

    Ugh. I was just going to post this same question!! Spitting up at our house happens all the time! They are never unhappy, just happy spitters! Yuck! I thought once they started solid foods, it would go away - oh well! Now to find some good spot remover to get out the colored spit up!

    No advice, just a little support to tell you I know how you feel!!

    I wonder this as well... it's kinda sad, but I think about not feeding them certain baby foods knowing what color and how difficult the spit up will be to clean out of things. I give in and feed it anyway... but still. They will only eat carrots down to a diaper and with a towel covering their chairs. {sigh}

    I am in the same boat... Ryan has always been a happy spitter gaining weight steadily and never really showing discomfort. We've tried Zantac and special formula and limiting his oz/day and nothing has made a difference. I'm tired of constantly smelling like puke and having my house smell like puke. So, no advice here but I can relate. Here's to hoping all of our LOs outgrow this stage soon!

    I always fed mine as much as they wanted to eat. The spitting up started getting better for us when they could sit unassisted and was way better by the time they were walking. I think just being able to hold their upper body more upright might have helped.
