My girls are 6 months old and still spit up at every feeding. Doctor says I feed them too much (8oz every 4-5 hours+1 jar baby food per day each) but if I dont feed them this much they SCREAM. They dont always spit up a lot but lately they have been spitting up more I think then they have in the past month. I guess Im just wondering when will it stop completely? My son NEVER used to spit up so this is new for me. Thanks to all who respond.

Do they have reflux? My ds had bad reflux and he last spit up at 18 months almost on the nose. Before that we used to carry 2 changes of clothes for him and a clean shirt for dh and I, several receiving blankets for burp rags and wet face cloths for the day in the diaper bag everytime we went somewhere.

It does sound like an awful lot of formula but every baby is so different, maybe if you feed them smaller amts more often? Going 5 hrs between feeds is a long time for just 6 months old, but smaller amts more often might help with the spitting up more! :)

I'm thinking reflux too. Have you talked to your pedi about it? Mine had BAD reflux and once they were on their prevacid, they did sooo much better. Still a little spit up here and there, but that is just normal. It's much better than before the prevacid. I also made sure to keep them upright for about 15 to 30 minutes after eating.

I would try smaller amounts more often. We were still on a 3 hour schedule until about 8 months. We had reflux too.

I'm also going to say smaller amounts more often. At 6 months, Caleb was eating about 5 ounces every 3 hrs, and we were just starting solids. He would still spit up though, but not all the time. 5 ounces seemed to be all his tummy could hold. I also added rice cereal to the formula. Not a ton, but it did seem to help.

I completely understand your frustration because we have been dealing with spit up since they came home from the NICU. Even two hours after they've eatern, they'll spit up. The pedi has confirmed it's not reflux because there is no pain or weight loss involved with it. They are labeled "happy spitters". I hate that term because there is nothing happy about spit up. My girls eat about 5 oz. and solids 3x day every 4 hours and we still get spit up. The doc said that if they are trying to sit up on their own it will get a little worse because they are using new stomach muscles. I'm hoping it will pass soon. Good luck!

I would try to go back to a 3 hour feeding schedule with smaller amounts of formula.

Mine were "happy" spitters as my pedi called them - they did not have reflux, they just spit-up - breastmilk, formula, babyfood, anything. They finally stopped (for the most part) around 15 months. :)

    Good luck!

One of my DDs spit up until past 1 when she was almost always upright. Gravity helped keep things down. its frustrating and messy. Have they been evaluated for reflux? Are they gaining weight well? Do they seem like they are in pain when they spit up? GL figuring it all out.

sorry i havent read the other replies, just adding my experience. one of my twins (brook) had spit up (mainly milky, it never bothered him but left me mopping up after him) id say it stopped at about 8 months when he learned to crawl on his hands and knees.
your post reminded me that it has stopped!!!!! hope you get relief soon x

You all are so helpful, I think I will try feeding them so much at one time. They are starting to try sitting up and I never really thought about it but that probably is why it has gotten worse in the past month. I dont think they have reflux, I have asked their doctor about it and he just says they are gaining weight so dont worry about it. Just seems like I have to change their clothes like every hour. I probably am feeding them too much though, I thought it was normal because ds ate the same amounts at this age but maybe he was just a little piggy! Thanks to all!

It's possible that they will spit-up anyway, even with the change. Jake spit-up until he was 14 months old! Being in the sitting position puts extra pressure on their bellies, causing it to come up more. You might loosen their diapers a bit when they are sitting up and see if that helps any.

I too am in the camp of feed them smaller amounts more frequently. I hope that works for you. Ours had reflux and when they started sitting up and crawling, the reflux got worse again before it got better.
