My DD has acid reflux really bad and she spits up all day. Literally, it doesn't matter if it has been 1 hr or even 2 hours after she fed she still spits up. It doesn't seem to bother her but she gets soaked, her hair gets soaked and usually she ends up with it in her ear if she is laying down. I don't know what to do for her. I'm starting to feel bad b/c DS can do tummy time and play a lot more than she can b/c everytime we try she spits up all over the place. HELP!!!!!

Well, if it's that bad, I would speak to the doc. Even if she is not fussy the spit-up could cause damage to her esophagus. Also, I would try weighing her formula down with rice cereal, after approval from your doc, of course. [IMG]

I'm so sorry you are going through this. I know how horrible and frustrating it is. My dd's both had reflux but Lorien had it the worst. Same thing as yours, she would spit up 10-12 times a day. I felt like all I was doing was changing bibs or onsies or both all freakin day. It drove me NUTS!! I stopped going out because I couldn't deal with the spit up and changing of clothes while we were out. I would clean her up and then as soon as I put her in the car seat she would spit up. I would change her bib and she would spit up again. I really thought I was going to lose my mind. Then, finally, I got the go ahead from the ped to put cereal in her bottle (though I used oatmeal cause it has 1 gram of fiber, rice cereal has none). I have to tell you, it changed the quality of life for us all. Her spitting up changed DRAMATICALLY!!!! For the first few days there was like nothing but then after a few days, the spit up occured maybe 2,3, or 4 times a day but it sure beat the heck out of 10-12. Hope your little one feels better soon and I hope for your sake, you can find a way to get it under control asap. GL!

My oldest spit up for 7 1/2 months, 25 times a day at least, perfectly happy with it, 95% for weight and height.

However, my ds also spits up, maybe a little less than her and is completely uncomfortable with it, so he's on meds (Zantac) and special formula. He's also gaining weight rapidly.

About 60% of babies spit up occassionally. If she's not in pain and gaining weight properly there is usually not a lot they can do. Gravitiy usually helps, when my oldest could sit up really well, it passed ... from one day to another.

double or nothing...I am the exact same way! I almost refuse to go out b/c it's such a mess. What formula was your DD on? Ours is on Enfamil A/R which is supposed to be thicker and help with spit up. I just wonder if I can thicken it since it already has a little bit of rice in it? I guess I will just call the ped today. thanks for your info!

It can't hurt to try it.

The A.R. barely helped. We had her on A.R. plus one teaspoon of cereal for every ounce of milk. That was the only thing that stopped the constant spit up and finally at about 6 months or so, it finally started to stop. Now she doesn't spit up at all unless she has just had a bottle and I start tossing her in the air [IMG]. Talk to you ped. It may be too soon for the cereal in bottle but it doesn't hurt to ask. I totally know what you are going through but just know that it won't last FOREVER!! It's just one of those pain in the butt things that you kind of have to just get through and hope you don't lose your mind in the process. GL!!!

Do you think that the reflux may be exacerbated by some sort of food intolerance.. like, say Dairy or Soy sensitivity? I'm in the process of an elimination diet for dairy and soy (I breastfeed) but it definitely minimizes the amount my sons spit up. Don't know if your kiddos are on pre-digested formula or not.. if not, you may want to chat with your dr about it. I'm learning that food intolerance (especially dairy) causes many ailments like snoring and night wakefullness.

    Oh well, just a thought.

Just FYI of our experience with spit up. Mine have EBM and formula and it was a complete lifesaver to add cereal to the bottle. We started at 9 weeks old (per pediatrician's instructions) and add 1 tsp oatmeal per oz of EBM/formula. It was our experience (and that of several friends) that the Enfamil AR wasn't thick enough and didn't really help but adding your own cereal made all of the difference in the world. They are 5 months old, get cereal in every bottle and very rarely spit up anymore. Good luck! Allison
