I am confused about these children. *sigh* I can’t tell how much spit up is normal and how much is excessive. I also wonder about the amount of gas they pass. They cry (scream) like it hurts very badly and even wake themselves up passing it. We’re doing 50/50 formula/breastmilk so I’m not sure how to start in trying to figure it out. Or is this just how 9 week olds behave? Help….

    thanks,
    Maggie

ps - We just switched to Enfamil Gentleease a few days ago....

Our pedi said if the spit goes across the room, then it is not good. My DS was spitting a lot so we switched to Enfamil AR(Added Rice). Made huge difference. I would mix BM with enfamil AR and see if there is an improvement.
    Good luck.

My boys were super gassy at that stage (and still are). I don't think the gas hurts them as much as it seems by the noise they make! Everything a newborn does they seem to feel the need to announce. ;) I'd only worry about spitup if it's regularly projectile, or if more than half of the food is coming back out.

9 weeks can definitely be a fussy age. However, if they are spitting up, that very well could be the cause of some/most of the fussiness. I would call the ped.

Yep, I would call the Ped and let them know what is going on. Are they acting like they are in pain when trying to eat? Arching their backs, screaming, refusing to feed? If so, those are also some reflux signs. I put gas drops in each of the bottles to help with the gas.

Also, if it was the formula it may take up to 2 weeks for you to see the results from the new gentleease that you are using.

My boys were the same. They told me to add rice to their formula it is heavier and it should stay in their bellies better. My boys also scream alot when they take their bottles. They had a swallow test done and then we switched to thick and easy or thicket. it is alot smoother then rice cereal. With gas we do gas drops max 4 times a day. You may need to swich formula ask doctor first. Nutramigen From enfimal is for colic the protiens are more broken down and easier to digest.

Some spit up is normal, especially if they get over fed, it's how babies get rid of the "excess" that their bellies can't handle.

However, the consistency matters too. My dd was spitting up clear fluid that looked like bile, and making awful faces when doing it....she also will spit up very thick, chunky, sour smelling spit. It's not a whole lot, but both of those are indicators of silent reflux. Coupled with her screaming fits/gas/afternoon and evening crying, we figured out reflux. Since we started the zantac last week she's not spitting up chunky anymore, just a little bile first thing in the morning occassionally, and her screaming fits have eased. We also switched to the generic gentle formula at the same time so that's probably helping too :)

Oh and some gas is normal too, babies are gassy, some more so than others. But our dd would scream off and on for hours in the late afternoon/evening, like having gas pains, and mylicon drops weren't helping her at all. We even tried 2 kinds of gripe water and nothing helped, but the zantac and formula change seem to be working!

My DD was always being sick but it wasnt projectile. She´d soak onsie after onsie and all the clothes she had on. It used to interfere with her sleep and she´d cry a lot. We did all the tests for reflux but it turned out she just had a lot of gas in her stomach. I FF and we had her on an AR milk and when I changed it to a normal milk (when we travelled abroad) she got so much better, it was amazing. Turning 7 months old helped too.
