In the post about changing crib sheets there a couple of people who say they don't use bumpers. I would really like to do away with them since changing the sheets is a pain, and they have gotten to where put their arms under them and sleep with their arms hanging out anyway, but I have always thought you were supposed to use them until a certain age. So I was wondering how many of you don't even bother with them at all?

I've heard the opposite. I've heard NOT to use them until a certain age because they're somehow linked to SIDS (although what isn't!?). I thought I'd start with them once the kids are rolling around to prevent bumps.

We don't use them yet. We have bought the mesh ones that let more air through but we haven't put them in the cribs yet. One of our girls doesn't move around much in her crib but one does move a lot but hasn't had any problems yet with limbs getting stuck. I imagine when the girls get a bit bigger they will so we will probably put the bumpers on then.

i've never used them. i've read that while newborns, can contribute to SIDS, then when able to pull themselves up, can use the bumper to climb on & fall out of the crib. mine are 9 months & move around like crazy- neither has hurt themselves without them- i've had to pull an arm or leg from between the slats a few times before lifting them out of the crib, but that's it. they're just for decoration imho.

We don't use them. Partially because of all the "bad" stuff you hear about the...SIDS, suffocating, etc, and partly because I made their bedding, and that was one less thing for me to do :) I was going to get the mesh ones because DD always ends up with her feeting sticking out the ends, but people said they'd still do that anyways, so I haven't bothered....

We don't use them. I had bumper pad in the crib until Geneva learned that no matter how tight I had it tucked down in she could still pull it up to get underneath to look out. They move all over the place in the crib and sometimes they have indents on their heads from the slats but they haven't been hurt.
We used with DS until he was about 6 months because that's when he started climbing.

I still have them on the twins cribs. They are tucked down, so that only about 1 inch is above the mattress...good binky catchers!

We only had ours on for about 3 months. I thought they were a pain also when trying to change the sheets. I took them out when the babies started to move around so they would suffocate themselves. I don't think I will use one again. They aren't worth the problem.

We never used them either. They would bump into the sides once in a while at the beginning, but it hasn't been an issue for months.

You can use them, but use extreme caution. I only used them for looks, and took them off when the boys were in the crib, for safety reasons. Not even a month ago a friend had one of her twin boys die from getting stuck up against the bumper, he suffocated. They were only 3 months old. He rolled into it, and suffocated.

You can get the mesh like bumpers with breather holes which would be much safer.

We use the breathable bumpers...they're great! I had the regular ones and I always worried about SIDS because our DDs have always moved around a lot in their crib, although they can't roll yet. Also, as you mentioned, changing the sheets is a real pain. I love the "breathable" bumpers...I think I ordered them from Target for $20...very worth it!!!

I got told not to use them by the midwives in the hosiptal as they can be linked to sids. Also it doesnt let air circulate around the babies and it can get really stuffy. x

I don't use them either. There's an arm or a leg through occassionally but it's never beem an issue. My DD will scrunch right to the top of the crib so that her head is against the slats - doesn't matter how much I move her, she always goes back there.

I still have them in the girls cribs. My son started using them to climb around 6 months so I took them out. Then when he started getting arms and legs stuck in the crib slats, I put them back and kinda tucked them in next to the mattress. I was afraid he was going to break a bone with some of the positions he got stuck in. I started using the crib tent thingy to keep him from climbing out. Until he learned how to unzip the tent!!! I hope the girls aren't the daredevil that he was (and still is!!).
