spinoff: when to tell they are unintersted in pureed foods?

I was just reading the replies to the question about when to give table foods and stop the pureed. It made me think of something. Emma (as most of you know is my whiney baby anyway) is super fussy during solid feedings at lunch and dinner. Maybe "just a phase" (to go along with that wonderful 9 month increase in fussiness/crying - grrrrrrrr) or is this possibly a sign? She is fine being fed oatmeal/fruit in the a.m. and is doing very well with finger foods.

Looks like I'm going to have a gazillion questions for the pedi tomorrow.

My clue that they are uninterested is that most of it ends up flying across the room because they are batting at the spoon when I am trying to put it in their mouth! Turning their heads away is another, less messy clue. :)

They bat at the spoon when I try to put it in their mouth. They also turn their heads.

You can try giving them their own spoon to play with...

Patrick and Kevin will either not open their mouths for the spoon or spit it out. Pretty good indication they are not interested.

How about spitting it out and turning their head away! Mine just started this with veggie's only and I am shocked by this. Now I need to try something else. They don't seem interested in the real thing or even the stage 3 meal type things. It ends up all over me!

Same for us! They pushed the spoon away and turned their heads consistently.

Let me start by saying that I had a battle for the spoon from day 1 of solids feeding -- they wanted to do it themselves at 6 months even though they didn't have the coordination yet. 9 months was when the refusal battles began for us. I started giving them soft cooked chunks & assorted finger foods along with spoon feeding between bites and that worked for a while. By 10 months, they were eating finger & table foods with gusto but would turn away from the spoon, push it away, and spit out any puree that made it's way in. The message couldn't be more clear. They did eat fruit purees longer than veggies but eventually I just let them self-feed everything and they were happier with eating then. I will say that mealtimes suddenly took MUCH longer but gradually shortened as their skills improved.
