I'm planning on getting the girls off their pacis once and for all by sending them up to heaven on balloons for new babies. And I also want to reward them with new bikes or tricycles or even big wheel type things They have very limited experience with either and some minor motor planning issues, it seems.

So...they are 2 years 7 months and I'm thinking by the end of this month and something to last through the summer.

    Any suggestions?

    (I didn't want to hi-jack Becky's "First Trikes" thread.)

My boys are turning 4 soon and we are thinking about getting them these Radio Flyer Twist Trikes (they can either be used as a big wheel or a tricycle). Will test drove one around a store at Christmas time and really liked it. I don't think my boys are quite ready for big boy bikes, so these seem like they might last them a little while.

When my DD was 2.5 we went to TRU totally expecting to get her a tricycle. She found a 12 inch princess bike with training wheels got on it and rode it around the store. We had no idea she would do that well, so that is the bike we came home with and she used it for 2 more years after that. I was going to suggest looking at the 12 inch training wheels bikes and see how they do, that way they could use them a few more years.

This is the size and style we got her at 2.5 years old. She did great wtih it and loved it.

My parents bought the Schwinn Trikes for the girls for Christmas. They were a little big even at the shortest setting, but they used their legs to propel them forward and backward. The few times it was warm enough to take to the park, they really enjoyed scooting around and ringing the bell. About a month ago they started putting their feet on the pedals but couldn't quite get the motion going but I'm sure it won't take long once we get out regularly.

I like the fact that they have a low center of gravity, so it should minimize tipping. Also, since it is adjustable it should last for a while. It comes in pink and red.

We got the Radio Flyer Twist Trikes that start out as a Trike and convert to a big wheel. Mine love them and they seem well made.

We got our gilrs the smallest Radi0 Flyer Tricycle from Toys R Us, the one that folds up and has a little storage compartment in the back. (They come in red or pink and purple). The girls are very small for their age (age 3), so a regular sized tricycle was WAY to big for them. These turned out to be perfect. Both girls have some motor delay, but after a little practice they do a great job!

Can you bring them to the store to try a few out and see how they do? My friend got her daughter a tricycle that was too big and she didn't get a chance to use it all summer!

Good luck with your choice, and don't forget the bike helmets!

Yeah, I'll keep all of these in mind, but maybe it's best if I let them choose and fall in love with their bikes. If they give up their pacis they can have ANYTHING!

    Thanks everyone!
