Spinoff from Stage 3 Foods: If you go straight to table foods, what do you feed them?

Actually, I guess my question is a little more complex. My girls are 8 months and each has only one tooth that is up about 1/3 of the way. So, obviously they can't chew anything. As stupid as this may sound, do they need teeth for the stage three foods?

Also, I noticed from the other post that many of you skipped Stage 3 entirely and went straight to table foods. If so, what table foods did you feed them, and how teeth-equipped were they?

Lastly, should my twinks have more teeth by now?

    Thanks,

    Robynn

Grace has had 2 teeth for about 2 months, but Lily still has none. They just turned 9 months old.

I feed them anything soft and mushable. Grace does occasionally use her teeth to bite something in half, but not really to chew (they are her 2 front bottom teeth). They mush everything with their gums.

They eat any veggie we have (mushed or small pieces), Cheerios, puffs, pancakes, french toast, fruit in small pieces or mushed, yogurt, meat (I puree this in the blender), small pieces of pasta, cheese, potatoes...lots of stuff. I still think we're lacking variety though, so I'll be interested to see what others say. I'm thinking about trying grilled cheese with them because they love cheese and bread.

Someone posted a good list a while back, and I saved it to my home PC, but it has taken a dive and DH needs to fix it. So I can't refer to it right now.

My twins are 10 months and each only have one bottom tooth. They love cut green beans (I just give them out of the can) and they adore pie, ice cream, etc. But I try to give them healthier foods, too. They can eat Cheerios just fine and like bagels cut into inch pieces. I do not try to give them something that I cannot mash in my mouth between my tongue and the roof of my mouth. I like using "ready-to-serve" soup as a good variety of vegetables and to add either a chicken or meat broth to their diet. I also am mixing formula 1/2 and 1/2 with whole milk to start weening them from breast. I do like the 3rd stage foods to see if they react to things like tomato sauce, etc. Since my two LOVE the lasagna one, I have found the any lasagna is one of their favorites. They like the sauce, the noodles and even the small pieces of burger.

I like to cut up pieces of melon or even pears and peaches from a can of fruit cocktail for them. I have four kids 5 and under, so I don't have a lot of time to cook, thus all the help from cans. If I had more time, I would still probably feed them most anything. My pediatrician says to go ahead and try anything they can't choke on like hot dog, popcorn, etc. Again, this goes to my test with my own tongue. I can't mush these, so they can't either. Good luck. By the way, the food processor or blender work wonders if you don't mind the cleanup. Babies will eat things mixed together that you might find nasty!

In addition to the above mentioned foods, you can also try macaroni and cheese, gerber meat sticks, pasta pick-ups or ravioli, toast with jam or cream cheese, and frozen waffles & pancakes.

We are on table foods completely, but it took about a month and a half of finger foods before they stopped wanting the pureed foods.

Teeth don't matter, since they just use their gums to mash the food.

    Hope that helps.

They don't need teeth (some kids don't get their first tooth till after a year) -- they mash with their gums. So anything soft enough to mash is fair game. We started with O's, then sweet potatoes and frozen peas (thawed and cooked, of course).

Good post - I've been wondering the same thing.

I do have a question, though. I didn't think they were supposed to have dairy for the first year? Is that just "straight" milk that should be avoided or anything that contains milk???? [IMG]

We started about 1.5 months ago giving our twins 1/2 cheerios. Then when we went to the 9 month appt. I found out the puffs were actually better first finger foods because they literally melt in your mouth when they touch saliva, puffs are new since my oldest DD. So we started doing 1/2 puffs at 9 months. DH and I both tried the puffs and they really do melt easily. About 3 weeks ago we started experimenting with some table foods. They like pancakes, toast, puffs, cheerios, cheese, banana, bread. We haven't tried a whole lot of things yet. I just last week gave a stage 3 just for the chunkier texture since I'm trying more table foods. My son still likes to be fed so those are good for him. My daughter likes to feed herself so she is prefering anything she can pick up herself versus from the spoon. They both have their bottom 2 teeth and one of my son's top teeth is 1/4 way through. They both just gum things. I have watched them and they actually do chew just with their gums.

I'm not planning to do too many stage 3's, but the chunkier texture is nice to help them get used to different textures.

I am definitely hoping that they are both on all table food by 12 months when we are able to start whole milk.

Just try different things, they really do learn to mash things with their gums, just make sure you are there just incase.

Thanks everybody! This helps! We are just passed 8 months now, so I think when we hit 9 months, I will start to work in some table foods. Two questions though, what the heck is a "puff"? Surely not Cheetos!!! And, I'm terrified they are going to choke? Is anyone else scared of this?

Puffs are made by GERBER and are sold in (white) plastic containers with a blue lid with the label wrapped around it....they are sold in many different flavors such as corn, sweet potato, cherry, apple, strawberry, etc...... they are in the same area as the babyfood in the store.
