spinoff: frat/id

Other than curiosity, is there a reason that a parent would need to know if the twins were identical or fraternal after they are born? I understand the importance during pregnancy for monitoring, riskiness, etc...

I was wondering the same thing. The only thing I could think of is if there was a need for a transplant of somekind.

Because you will lose your mind the 10 millionth time people ask you, and tell you what they think all in one outing, and you can't shut them up because when you say "I don't know" they go on and on and on! Now I can say, "Yes, they're identical, and walk on without being hounded...usually. You will also lose your mind looking at them trying to figure it out yourself if they resemble each other closely. We had ours tested at about 2 months and it was a looong 2 months.

I don't think most parents will have a time when they truly physically need to know, but the wondering and questioning and curiousity is rough. Also, it was very important for me to know because we were thinking about having more kids. If they had been fraternal, we probably wouldn't have had more ourselves and would have adopted. Since they are identical, my chances are really low for having twins again, so here I am pregnant with one (hopefully).

The driving force is curiousity. Maybe some people could deal with not knowing but I wanted to know if they were frat or ID after they were born just like I wanted to know the genders before they were born. It's not so obvious as I expected that it would be and it drove me bonkers not knowing.

As for the questions, I just told strangers they were ID before we knew because it's easier that way. Someday, though, they'll be asked over and over and I wanted them to have the answer.

Of course, there are sometimes medical reasons to know (but I'm not sure you could convince the insurance company...) For example, if one has a medical issue, an ID twin would be more at risk for the same issue than a frat twin would.

The reason we did it is b/c I couldnt stand not knowing and also to answer everyone when they asked if they were frat or ID. I hated not knowing b/c everyone has an opinion!
