I hear that for planned C-sections the doctors definitely administer spinal.

I also hear a lot of horror stories about the terrible backaches and nerve problems that people get a few years down the line due to spinal.
Is it true? Has anyone had any issues? Can you ever be normal (without any back aches or problems) after having taken the spinal?

Somehow, when I think about it, epidural doesn't sound bad but spinal makes it very scary!!!
And most likely, I'll have a planned CS and a spinal!!!!!!

    Any inputs? Thanks!!!

I had a spinal for my c-section and the only problem I had was feeling like it was hard to breathe. I was breathing fine, but I guess from going numb you get that feeling. Other than that, I didn't have any problems with my spinal.

I did not have any trouble after my spinal either.

After ds#1 was born (I had an epidural) I had terrible back aches - I thought it was the epidural's fault - but come to find out it was just that I had a baby and all the baby stuff to carry around -that was making my back ache - not the epidural.

This was similar to my experience. I had a spinal with the girls and off and on for probably a year, I'd get this funky numb/tingly feeling around my left shoulderblade. I was never sure if it was from the spinal or the fact that my posture is now atrocious and I'm hauling around two babies and all their gear.

But I don't remember noticing it for a while now :)

I had a botched epidural that left me in excruciating pain and some damage - he hit a vein/nerve. I also had a spinal with no pain or side effects... I don't know what to say!

This was true for me too. It's been two years { Wow!} since my c/s and I have never felt any back pain. I was terrified of getting the spinal, but it really wasn't too bad at all. I had a great staff around me, they let me squeeze their hands while it was being done, and didn't even feel it being done. :hug99: I hope this is the case for you as well.

I had a spinal and I haven't noticed anything (other than my usual back issues) as a result of it.

Me too! I honestly didn't feel a thing other than the doc pushing on my back with his fingers.

I guess I am not the norm because my back has been awful since the spinal. If I lay flat on my back somethhing goes whacky and then my legs become paralyzed. The Dr. basically said they can do nothing to help me and that it is likely from the spinal.

I have not had any long term effects, but I did have a spinal headache for a few days, which was more painful than labor IMO. If you do get it, ask for a blood patch as lying still for days until it goes away is not exactly an option with one (let alone two!) new babies and for me at least the caffeine drip did nothing but keep me awake. (Also not helpful.)

After two failed attempts to put in the spinal (I had an emergancy c/s and was having contractions every 30 seconds!) they finally put me out. I had a sore spot on my back where they tried to put in the need for like 10 months immediately after the c/s, it was a spot about the size of a quarter. It especially hurt if I was ever cold and found I had to keep my back really warm to be comfortable.

I did have a sore back around my tail bone area and only noticed it when sitting too long. I think my back pain now is from my lack of stomach muscles. I didn't have back pain when pregnant but those stomach muscles were stretched and tight. After the babies were born those stomach muscles which support your back are loose.

I was scared to death of the spinal --- EASY !! Those pregnacy symptoms are way worse !!

With my spinal it took 2 tries to get it. It didnt take right and my surgery was a nightmare and I ended up being knocked out right after the boys were out. Now when I take a deep breath in or sigh hard, I get a tingly feeling down my lower back an into my legs. The hospital said it could be a temp thing and if it lasts longer than 6 months, to get a MRI done to make sure nothing was damaged or scarred. But then again, I am a "if it can happen it will happen to" person :D so dont think its a normal thing!

When I had my first dd vaginally I received an epidural... I had a temporary back ache for a few months after that. With the spinal I received for my c/s with the twins I had no noticeable back pain...of course I was sore from the incision, so maybe that blocked out any pain. In either case, I definitely had no long lasting back ache from either...even the pain from the epidural was annoying but not horrible...

I had an epidural with my second. Then a few days later a spinal to fix a 4th degree tear that they missed. The epidural was way worse than the spinal. I did have some problems for about a year later. Don't know which caused the problem or if both did. I saw a chiropractor and that seemed to help heal the area. I have a gut feeling though it was the epidural and not the spinal. Spinal took effect right away and worked the way they said it would, but the epi was not effective.
