    Hi!

DS often mixes up "you" and "I". For example, he might say "Mommy, hold you" or "Want Mommy to give it to you". I hve heard him say I and use it correctly, but this is getting a little wierd. Now DD is picking up the habit. Anybody else have this going on?

Also, he will repeat what he hears on TV. For example, he might sing the Deigo tune, "Say click, take a pic!" or a line from a cartoon or something. He laughs and pretends he is the character or something. He does not repeat it over and over, he does it during play. Is this normal, or should I be worried? Thanks!

I think its normal. JB would mix up he & she. They also repeat lines from shows. One day this week, JB walked around saying, "You are a sad, strange little man" from Toy Story.

My oldest did that. Twins are not quite there yet...

normal! They hear you saying "want me to hold you?" it's normal for them to use their pronouns interchangably for a while before getting it straight.

I have an actor here also. Trent has a favorite part of a short cartoon he loves and he acts it out several times a day. It makes him downright giddy if you play along. They both pick up songs very quickly and try to "read along" with the sections of books they've memorized. Lucky boys got my memory... DH can't remember the words to his own songs much less anyone else's.

My boys are still speaking mostly in the 3rd person so I can't help you on the pronouns but it makes perfect sense to me that they would use them the way they hear them at first.

Yep...both of mine do it and my friends kids that are the same age do it. They both say "mommy hold you".

Hi, I am taking a class about how children learn speech, and we just covered the "I" "you" issue.
It takes toddlers a while to get it because it is confusing: "I" and "you" constantly switch during the course of a conversation depending on who is talking. It is hard to explain the difference because it is hard to model it for your kids - how are you going to explain that you use "I" for yourself and they can use "I" for themselves, and they can also use "you" for both people? They will get it as they are continually exposed to the correct usage. It is completely normal for them to get it wrong at first. Pronouns are pretty tricky for them in general because they have to figure out which noun to replace (Mommy, Susan, etc.) and which correct pronoun in which case to use: he or him, she or her, etc.
