Twins are 2yrs 2mos old. They can say words (some not as clear as others)but no sentences yet. They understand everything. Our parents as teachers lady hasn't made any comments about it yet.

For my older ds, I worried a bit about it but being a boy, I knew he was going to talk late. He was a month shy of his 2nd birthday when he just exploded with words and sentences.

Am I being paranoid? Should I worry? I know they have 3 things against them:

    1: They are boys
    2: They are twins
3: They have an older sibling

Even with all those things, I am still worried.

When did you start speech therapy and did you initiate getting the therapy for your child or did someone else?

This is about the age to start the process. If you are going through your states early start program it could take more than a month just to get them set up to be evaluated. Once they are evaluated then you will have better answers as to how far behind (if at all) they are. My DD is currently in private speech therapy. We started with the free state program but after a few sessions I could tell it was not going to work so we went private. Within a few weeks we saw real progress and her pre-school teacher noticed too! My DD is JUST starting to put together three words. MOST kids catch up by the time they enter kindergarden. We started her early because she was starting to show strong signs of frustration and started "communicating" by pushing, hitting and crying. Good luck!

Jonathan seems to get frustrated easily too. I think I will check into getting evaluated.

It doesn't hurt to call early intervention to get them evaluated, but as a guideline at 30 months they need 50 words and to be able to make 2 word sentences (that's what our speech therapist told us at their 30 months appointment). So I definitely wouldn't worry about the lack of sentences at their age.

We started speech therapy at 18 months and I think we got the first real words close to 2... now at 3 they are only 3-6 months behind.

My one DS was getting PT through EI since he was one. The therapist mentioned that if I had a concern with speech, I should get him/them evaluated by 18 months. They were both evaluated at 16 months and began speech therapy at 17 months. We increased speech to twice a week for my one DS who was further behind.

At 3 years 3 months, they are still receiving speech but it's now through the school system. My one DS has issues with articulation because he was tongue tied since birth. I just had it corrected about a month ago so it's going to take some time for him to learn the proper way to speak. He receives 40 minutes of therapy a week.

My other DS who was receiving speech twice a week has taken off ever since starting preschool. He gets 50 minutes of therapy a week. Every day he is talking more and more and I really doubt either of them will need speech once they enter kindergarden.

One of our boys started at 20 months (18 adjusted) 1x per week. Our pediatrician suggested we call at 18 months adjusted at his 18 month actual check up if he didn't take off (had 5 words at that time). He still only had the 5 words when we called EI. He had speech for less then 5 months.

The speech therapist would give us ideas and ways to help him. Since we are with them way more then just 1 hour a week the therapy sessions are concentrated on giving the us the tools to help the him. Definitey worked.

I wanted to add that in our state they have to respond and evaluate the child fairly quickly. From the time I called to our first speech therapy session was just 2 weeks.
