My boys are a bit behind in speech, although they've been picking things up a bit lately. We finally had our first speech evaluation today and it went great! They're only a little behind; a little ahead of 18 months but not quite caught up to where they should be at 24 months. So that's a relief! She was happy that they babble a lot and like to point and engage in everything with people.

She showed me a few activities like withholding treats or toys or activities until they attempt communication, encouraging them to repeat after us, and suggested trying to spend a bit of one on one time having running commentary on whatever they're interested in. Even while she was with us the activities were totally working so I am really excited. Hopefully we'll be past the pointing and grunting and screaming fits and more into words in no time.

Once they figure out how to ask for things and to try to speak, they won't shut up.

Yayyyy I'm glad it wasn't as bad as you were expecting.

I could have posted this exact topic when mine turned two. I felt my twins were behind in speech and took them to a speech therapist for an evaluation. As it turns out they were on the lower end of normal for their age, but the woman gave me great tips such as withholding an item until they tried to talk, pointing to an object and calling it something other than what it was, speaking slowly etc. Six months later and the world has changed around here. I can't get my two to stop talking and they are on par with all other children their age. Now they talk all the time and say the cutest things. We graduated from speech therapy after the second visit so I guess those tips must have done wonders.

Hmmm....so I guess it's good news. ;) Just be careful what you wish for. DH *always* said he couldn't wait for the boys to start talking. Could.not.wait. Let me tell you-he is eating those words!

Glad it's not as bad as you thought! My boys were just like that at that age...shortly after they just exploded with words!
