At our 18 month checkup each of my boys had 10 words or so, but real strong receptive language skills and both signed a little bit. My ped wasn't worried and told call before our two year check up if their skills weren't progressing and gaining new words. Michael is doing well, starting to say two word phrases and mult-syllable words, but I have some concerns about Ryan. He can't pronounce more than one syllable, and sometimes he only says the second syllable. for example "mo-o-o" is motorcycle and he skips "heli" and just spits out "chkopt" for helicopter. It's almost like his mouth can't make the movements needed for multisyllabic words. Anyone know if this is normal for 21 months, or does it warrant a call to my ped?

I wouldn't worry, Sounds pretty normal to me. Those are big words for a 21 month old. My oldes is 3 and still cant say Helicopter properly. Boys are also a little slower on the speech thing. He'll wake up one day and be able to say loads. They seem to go in spurts for speech. One day barely talking, or mispronouncing words, the next, it's like they have read a dictionary in their sleep.

I saw a difference between my DD and DS with speech around that age. My DS had troubles with certain words like you are describing and after he turned 2, his speech improved so much. I would say if you are still concerned when it comes to their 2 year WBV, it can never hurt to mention it to the pedi.

Jack *still* has what I call "mush mouth"; he talks a lot but sometimes he pronounces things so strangely, or shortens words so that I can't understand him. :pardon: I think that's really normal for this age. If it doesn't get better with time you might schedule a hearing test just to be certain; I know my BFF's nephew had a lot of problems being understood for a long time and it turned out that his ears were so plugged he couldn't hear properly. As soon as he got tubes, he was right as rain! :good:

Totally normal I would say. My 6yr old had 2 words at 25mths but many signs to show he comprehended. Now at 6yrs old he doesn't shut up....LOL
