Im trying to get back into posting here, especially since my other mommy boards i frequent hardly anyone has twins. But my big dilemma is with my youngest set of twins my son isnt talking, i mean hardly at all. They turned 2 in december, and he barely says mom, dah, and yea. Any other time he just crieds and screams, Im really frustrated with this, because the doctor doesnt see a huge problem with it "because they are twins and this is normal" But Serenity, although her speech isnt perfect, shes talking a whole lot more. With my oldest set of twins I didnt have this problem at all. Destiny talked first, and is still the most verbal of the two, but they both talk fine. I am really concerned about this. Did anyone else have problems with speech delay? I really want to get help for him, but im not sure how to do this when people around here thinks its normal. Any advice would be great, because Im like i said getting extremely frustrated with it. I try to get him to form words and work with him really i do...but its like nothing is working. Caihlen was also extremly slow with walking crawling everything. He didnt start crawling till he was almost a year old, didnt start walking till he was almost 16 months old. And im just really concerned theres another factor in why he isnt speaking yet. Really seems like he has some sort of problem with motor skills....but no one wants to listen.

If you're concerned, you can always call the school district and ask for an evaluation. Here in MI you don't need a doctor's script or recommendation to have EI eval and treat. I think that's the same for most states. Here are some links that give some "norms" for ages. Sorry the Dr. doesn't seem to be listening to your concerns. Continue reading and talking as much as you can and try to get him to imitate you (even if it's just a sound or part of the word)instead of pointing, crying or grunting to get what he wants. Good luck.

I don't know about Kentucky, but here you can self refer to the Early Intervention program, and they'll come out and evaluate your kiddos for free. If your pedi isn't taking you seriously, check your phone book (or ask friends) how to find the EI program. If you can't find the number to call, your local school district should know where to send you. It's certainly worth getting him evaluated just in case there is something you could help him with. All that said, there are kids who talk late and are just fine, so don't stress. But it's great that you're being proactive!

My boys are also speech delayed and are receiving EI services. At their 18 month check up the ped thought they were a bit delayed and their evaluation showed about a 30% delay. If Early Intervention is an option, I would look into it. It's been really great for my boys. You know him best so I would insist that your pediatrician refers you to someone or do what the pp suggested and call for yourself. Good luck!

I agree with PPs - definitely check with Early Intervention.

I hope the EI folks are very helpful to you. I just know at the boys' 18mo WBV, they only had about 5 words, and a couple of the words were the same sound ("da" was dad and dog.) They didn't qualify for EI services, but our ped didn't like where they were so she gave us a referral for private therapy- and she did WONDERS. Joel is now AHEAD of his "peers" in language. Bryan is still receiving services (actually, now through EI, but a different state- we moved so we lost our private therapist.) But he's doing much better as well. It's just articulation that he is getting help with- something we want to address now instead of later. So if for whatever reason EI doesn't work out, and you're still concerned, ask your ped for a referral for a private evaluation at least!
