I know that girls generally talk more & earlier than boys. And I'm not really worried, just curious how much your boys were talking at this age. At their 1 yr checkup, I told the pedi that DS basically had 2 words - "No" and "Don't". :) He wasn't worried, as long as he seemed to be understanding things. So now he also says "Bye" and " 'llo" (for hello, on the phone). He never says "mama" or "dada", though.... :(

What kind of words were your boys saying at this age?

We had ZERO words (either boy) at 12 mos. At 14 mos Nick said only one spontaneous word, "No no no no no", Joe had zero still. I wasn't worried, but definately anxious b/c their (girl) cousin who is 6 weeks younger was talking all over the place very early.

At 16 months Nick had a bit of a language explosion and he now has about 15 words, but only about 1/2 of those are spontaneous (everything else he is saying after we say a word or if we say, "Can you say..."). Joe also amped up his language, but only has about 5 words. I saw their receptive language skills really take off at this time too. We also had an explosion of signing at 15-16 months. We had been practicing signing with them starting at about 10 months and suddenly they are signing about 10 signs. The boys also really improved with their object recognition at this age.

Here are some of the words, signs, object recognition we have:

WORDS: Mama, Dada, No, Out, Up, Down, More, Clock, Scooby, Ball, Bowl, Bath, Bye, Pee-Pee, Poo-Poo, All Done, Car, Boat, Ow, Hello
SIGNS: Eat, Mom, Dad, More, Ball, Dog, Fish, Milk, Baby, Sleep, Shoes
OBJECTS: Eyes, Belly Button, Ears, Nose, Head, Toes, Clock, Ball

Ben didn't say anything until 22 months. Adam didn't say a word until after he turned 2yo. Our ped wasn't concerned since they had great comprehension. They were talking in sentences by the time they turned 3yo and they never needed therapy.
