Hey everyone, we were playing with Reece today and noticed that he started doing something with his neck. I am going to call the dr. on Monday to see if it is something serious. I have attached a video so you can check it out. He does the spasm at 1:24, 1:39, and 1:54 mark. Video

If anyone has any info. it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Okay I just watched the video and the first time through I didn't notice anything (other than a cute baby!)

I paid attention at the 1:24 mark and thought maybe you were talking about the arm flapping. But I didn't see that again at the 1:3 or 1:54 mark. So now I'm wondering if I'm the only one who doesn't see it?

I know babies have a lot of muscle spasms as they are learning how to use their muscles. To me it just looked like normal baby jerky movements.

At the 1:24 mark he dips his head into his chest and shakes.

My first reaction is that it looks like a little shiver like when you're cold or like you get for no reason. Has he done it before/since? How was he before or after? Was he confused? What about calling your docs office and asking if you can either link them up to the video to watch it or bring a laptop with you to an appointment? It is definitely small and I wouldn't have noticed had you not said anything. momma if it bothers you there's no hurt in getting him checked out. He is adorable BTW!

He has never done it before, but he when he did it during the video, he had done it like 10 times with in 5 minutes. We just gave them some water in sippie cups right before, so that was his first experience with water.

I see it. It looked like a shiver to me, but if you are that concerned talk to his doc

I see what you are talking about Holly. They are refluxers right? I wonder if it has something to do with that?

Could it be a 'pee-pee' shiver? Sometimes babies shiver when they urinate...

My DS kind of does the same thing shiver thing when he pees and if he'd just had water before he may have peed. I don't think I would have noticed anything had you not given the times. My DS's hands and chin used to quiver a lot from the time he was a newborn up until several months old and the doctors had a specific name for it. Essentially it was his muscles trying to "connect the dots" and gain coordination. But definitely talk to your doctor if you are worried, better safe than sorry. They're cuties! :)

My son did that exact "shiver" kind of move when he first learned how to sit for about fist a week or too I think. It seemed like he stabilized himself by doing that with his head, specially when he looked for his toy that dropped. Now it's gone. I'm not sure.

I did notice it too but did not really get concerned for some reason. Yes, he also does this when it's cold.

    What a little cutie!!![IMG]
To me, it looks totally normal, all my children do it, it's like a little shiver, it can happen a lots of different times, when they pee, or they are cold, or when they get a little bit excited. It really seems totally normal to me, but if you are worried, call your doc on monday.
    Seriously he is adorable!

I had to watch twice and very closely. I didn't see anything that would make me concerned. He's very cute. I was laughing at your other son rocking on his knees- mine do that all the time now.

I only really noticed it at the first time that you pointed out. All of my kids have done the shiver at some point. When they pee, when they are trying to stabilize themselves, etc. I think it's great that you got it on video. I would try not to worry about it too much. They are so young and have such immature neurological systems that they are really fine tuning everything. We had lots of odd things that I questioned alot with the boys because there were two of them. :pardon:

We took him to the ER because we got so worried that he was having some type of seizure. The dr. told us that he def. did have some type of "spell" after looking at the video, but that it probably wasn't anything serious. We are supposed to follow up with our ped. on Monday and he will probably order an EEG just to be on the safe side and give everyone piece of mind.

The dr. did say that he was either just "being silly" or some type of reflex, muscle reaction.

Thanks Rachel! One thing I should add, it really does not help looking on the internet trying to diagnose the problem! You start reading horror story and worst case scenarios for everything possibly wrong. I def. won't be doing that anymore!

Just say NO to Google. It will drive you :tease: No one posts "feel good" info about twitching on the internet.

My son has done that and I noticed it but we kept an eye on it. Turned out he had acid reflex and when he was doing it it was coming up and he was fighting the throwign up phrase of it. I think it is normal but it is always safe to ask the Dr. his opinion.

Glad you took him to the ER, I hope everything works out fine with the EEG, I'm sure it will. And yes I love google but when you're worried just say no to google haha.

Hmmmmm. I didn't notice anything unusual when I watched the video. Hopefully your pedi. can give you some insight.

When Owen was about 5 or 6 months old he did something very similar. We ended up taking him to the ped who then sent us to the ER. He stayed for almost 2 days while they ran a mountain of tests. Everything came back normal. Their neurological and muscular systems are so immature that he was likely just manifesting the immaturity in "spasms". He is almost 6 now and is very normal. He hit milestones when he was supposed to. We've seen no ill effects since. I hope the same for you-I know we were petrified at the time.

Glad you took him to the ER. Let us know how the ped appt goes.

He's adorable. It looks pretty normal to me. My boys do the same kind of things. They do the shiver thing too that other people have mentioned.

 I agree that it does look more like a shiver or shudder than a seizure, and also agree that it's probably a pee shiver, or reflux coming up in his throat! I hope your dr can give you some more answers though because there's nothing worse than worrying (and googling) something and not being sure if it's serious or not!

Just got home from the dr. and he said that everything is ok. He said it was probably some type of muscle reflex and babies do weird stuff all the time. Said he looked perfectly normal!

 It never hurts to get stuff like that checked! Us mommies are usually the first ones to notice signs of more serious conditions!
