Soy formula?

I just took my dd to the dr today because I believe she has silent reflux. Sounds like he agrees. But I also mentioned that my mother, myself and my hubby all have some slight lactose intolerance. Not a milk allergy but milk does bother our stomach's, so he said that could be causing or irritating the reflux.

So he put her on zantac twice daily and suggested switching formula to soy. I never used soy with my kids, anything I should know about it??

    TIA! :D

Soy formula can be quite the debate...some research indicates that due to high levels of estrogen it can lead to early puberty in boys and girls as well as infertility. Of course there is a lot of contradicting research as well stating that it doesnt. If your comfortable with it then its just fine and I think it can really help some babies!
My dd has silent reflux as well. We did try soy for about a month or so but just didnt notice a difference-no matter what formula she was on. She eventually ended up on alimentum and is still on it, although I'm hoping to get her back to milk based at 9 months since it didnt really make a difference for her reflux. Lots of babies with milk issues might also have soy issues, but if its a lactose thing then soy would help. You could also try a lactose free formula as well.

    Good Luck!

All of my kids were on soy at some point. No problems here!

i personally don't find much evidence that soy is the healthiest option. similac and other manufacturers make "sensitive" formulas where the lactose is removed. to me that would be the more sensible first step.

I have read that research too Hsuter which is why I hadn't tried the soy already, with having pcos already I don't want to set either baby up for infertility if I can help it.

Piccologirl we switched her to the "gentle" formula already which only has 1/4 the lactose in it, I wonder if I should go to the "sensitive" that has no lactose in it and see first....

I too have pcos and didnt want to take the risk as my dd is already at risk (because I have it), so once we saw that it wasnt helping we switched. I would definately try the lactose free stuff first and you could always try the hypallergenic if you definately want to avoid soy (as we eventually ended up using), although it is quite pricey!

both my kids were on soy from 2 months forward and my son didn't grow a vagina so I feel its "anecdotal" at this time...the pedi actually recommended soy over the "gentle" formulas first...

If you are concerned you could switch to Alimentum or Nutramigen as well.

My LOs have been on soy formula since 1 1/2 months. They started on Similac advance which began to give them terrible, TERRIBLE gas and pain. They wouldn't sleep for more than 10 minutes at a time during the day and they'd wake up screaming! It was a terrible experience. We called the ped and switched to Similac Sensitive and for 2 weeks, we thought we were out of the woods. The boys actually started to sleep! After that two weeks everything started up again, the ped suggested soy this time. They boys have been great with soy formula! No complaints! I wouldn't worry about the things they're saying about soy, none of it is really backed up.
