All 3 of my boys are in the same bedroom so therefore we will eventually have bunk beds and 1 twin bed. We want to get the bunk beds now (we already have the twin bed and the bunks will match) At what age would you feel "safe" allowing a child to sleep on a bunk bed OR, for now, should I put three beds side by side in the room and then there will be no room in the room but at least they will be safe.

I think I remember reading in the pottery barn kids catalog that it is not recommended until the age of 6. We are probably going to get the twin beds that eventually could be stacked to make a bunk.

    Hope that helps

    This is what it says:
The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that top bunks not be used for children under 6 years of age.

funny that you should post this question, I was just about to post the same question. We had always planned on getting ds #1 bunk beds and now that we have ds #2 it will work out perfect in the future. But, we are moving in the near future and will still be in a 3 bdr house and was seriously considering getting the twins bunk beds for room and because I hate the beds they are in and was going to get rid of them anyways. So it will be interesting to see your responses.

I would say in your case, your young ones are definitely too little to be on the top, but how is your 3 yr old sleeping now? Does he require bed rails still, and does he walk around a lot at night? I would say if he does, than he might not be ready for the top bunk. I am considering putting my dd on the top, because she is a real good sleeper and never gets up at night unless it's to use the bathroom and she always yells for me to come get her anyways. My ds #1 will not go on the top bunk for a long time, he's a sleepwalker.

It isn't recommended to put a child into a top bunk until they are at least 6.

We were just at a hotel this past weekend that had bunks. We let oldest ds sleep on top bunk. It was his first time and I was nervous, but he did great. He loved it in fact. We had more trouble with the twins wanting to climb the ladder ALL THE TIME!!! You may want to consider that too.

I was thinking at least 5 but it may depend on your kids.

Yup its 6 minimum, says it with any bunkbed you buy. I have a 5yr old boy and he gets up on top and plays with his sister who's 7 so he has no problem scaling it. But if it was the middle of the night and he had to go to the bathroom I wouldn't trust him to climb down safely. He'd be rushing and might fall. Most likely he wouldn't but he's not 100% there yet. I think they are a good height at 6 too that if they do fall its not that much of a fall. So you've got at least 2-3 years before you can put someone on top.
