About half my day is recovering lost soothers, negotiating fights over stolen soothers, washing soothers that have been thrown away, running upstairs to recover a lost soother in the crib. I am fed up! So that's it... soothers are done at our house! It's going to be a LOUD couple of days, but I am ready to be over it. Any suggestions to make the transition easier?

We dropped them cold turkey and just did CIO. After the first day they didn't even realize they were gone. Good luck!

Good luck! Part of me wants to take them away, the other part of me says "But what am I gonna do when they are BOTH crying?!" I am a huge wuss and am putting off taking them away! :D

But I did successfully take my oldest ds's away before he turned 2 and it was a piece of cake, couple nights of crying/fussing. My dd, however, was 3.5 before we got rid of hers :FIFblush:

They have been grumpy about soothers all afternoon.... bedtime is in 1/2 hr, and I am opening a bottle of wine.

Ok, so far 1/2 hr of crying and they seem to be winding down, but they're MAD. I hate doing this part! I tried giving them each a lovey and when I walked in their room I got two lovies thrown at me. I know that if I gave them a soother they'd be asleep in 30 seconds, but I figure it's only going to get harder to take them away later.

    :wine: is helping.

You are a brave woman! We have been doing sleep training for the past 2 weeks, so pacis are a lifesaver right now. But, I agree, I am so sick of searching for them and stopping the boys from stealing them from one another all day (I often take them away during the day because of this). I don't plan to take them away anytime soon (for night/naps), but I will definitely be opening a bottle of wine... or 2... that night!
    BTW, what are lovies?

I dropped my sons paci at about 11 months because he shoved the whole thing in his mouth and almost choked on it. Don't ask me how he did it...must have a big mouth...that and teething pain. Anyway, it still rough...I wish I didn't have to do it, but it was a safety issue. DD still has hers...we'll see. She doesn't toss them out of the crib...yet...as soon as she does, they are gone. I have like 6 in there for her.

My first kept hers till she was about 3 (for bedtime only)...then she gave them to the Easter Bunny for all the "baby bunnies" that needed them. That was easy.

    Good luck.

Sorry, I have no advice because my twins don't use them but I can't help laughing at your post. I am just picturing the soother negotiations and stolen soother fights in your house. You poor woman-hang in there, thanks for the chuckle.

I don't even know how it happened, but I stopped grabbing their pacifiers out of their crib when I got them up in the morning. They didn't even notice. For the past 6 weeks they've only been using them at nap time and bed time. I'm hoping to completely take them away in the next couple months.

Ok, so last night sucked. The kids cried for an hour at bedtime, then Miles woke up for about 1/2 hr at about 9, but after a bit of a cuddle he went back to sleep. Then Austin woke up at 10 or so and I cuddled him, then put him down and he cried for a long time. I went and got him and we watched tv until 1 am  But after that they slept through until 8.

And this morning they were a bit screechy at first, but they went down for their nap NO problem and they slept for 2 hrs apiece! So it's early to say that it's working, but it's not as bad as I thought it was going to be. We'll see how tonight goes. If this works out that they can be relatively happy during the day without a soother and get to sleep at night, I will regret not doing it earlier!

Today went pretty well! A few screechy periods, but mostly just fine and they went to bed without any fuss! Less than 10 minutes of crying!

Glad things are going well! I think you are in the home stretch of being done with pacis forever! :drinks:

I've had a few car rides where I regretted not having a soother....but I just keep tossing back a new toy (every time the old one goes flying) until she goes to sleep.

    Just an update...

We are officially over soothers! There is a bit of drama at bedtime, but it's over within a few minutes as soon as I pull out their favourite book. I haven't once had to go in and deal with them waking at night looking for a soother! During the day there's periods where they're a little cranky, but I feel that I am responding better to their needs by figuring out what's actually wrong than just giving them a soother. They're also working more on talking, although that might just be a coincidence, but I swear I am finally hearing them call me mama!

So, if you're looking to drop soothers... I'd say go for it! Lots less hassle than I expected.
