my pedi said we could start introducing solids now, starting with the rice cereal ata 1:4 ratio. i thought maybe he'd hold off, since they were 5 wks. early, so just under 3 months corrected, but i guess not.
question is- when did you all start solids? right now they are breastmilk all day with formula before bed (we were hoping that would extend sleep a bit! not sure if that owrked or not...!)
also, how did you do it? 1x? 2x? (he suggested 2)
    any tips or suggestions?
it seems like i always get nervous with anything NEW, KWIM?!?!? i'm always worried i'll do something wrong!
    thanks in advance!

I am just doing rice cereal one time a day until they get the hang of it. What is the 4:1 ratio mean?

he said to mix it 4:1 iwth water/juice/breastmilk, and as they get better, change it to 3:1, then 2;1, then 1:1. i think just to make sure it isn't too thick at first.

my babies were 6 weeks early and we started rice cereal at 4 months. i feed it to them 2x's a day. late morning and before bed. i usually give them some of their bottle and then do the cereal and finish w/ the rest of the bottle. remember, feeding them the cereal now is to just get them used to eating and using the spoon...it isn't for nutrition. we didn't measure our cereal...we just put a little formula in a bowl and mixed the rice cereal in...we made it thicker than you probably are supposed to, but they ate it fine. they won't eat a lot...and get the camera ready...great pix of cereal all over their face [IMG]

starting this weekend we can give them veggies and fruit. that will be another whole learning experience for us and them! i plan to do those separately from the bottle, but don't know how that will go over.

We started at 4 months. Ours didn't like it at first, so we just gave a few spoonfuls - very runny - 1x a day. They actually cried the first few times we tried it. We gave them lots of praise and didn't keep feeding it to them once they started crying, but we would try a little again the next day. By about the 3rd or 4th day they were eating it with no problems. My pedi said once they get the hang of 1x a day, move to 2 and then to 3. They're now eating it 3x a day with a veggie mixed in at lunch and tomorrow we're starting fruits. Once they get the hang of it, it's really fun...although messy.

De, if you aren't comfortable you can start in a couple of weeks. It'll be ok, have fun with it and they'll relax and enjoy it too!!

I gave my guys cereal for the first time today. It was a great time for all! They loved squishing it in their mouths. I gave it to them very runny, I did not measure anything, just a tablespoon like amount of cereal with a shot of formula. They actually ate it. I will start doing it once a day for awhile and see what happens.

Our ped gave us the Ok to start solids. I gave DS a little cereal yesterday and he was not impressed though he did swallow a small amount of it. I mixed 1 TBSP of cereal to 3 TBSP formula and it came out pretty runny. DD handled it a little better but she didn't really swallow any of it. Nobody cried, though DS looked like he was going to. Poor guy!
Our ped said 3 X per day but I think I'm going to stick to 1X per day until they get the hang of it.
