My pedi told us at our appt on Wednesday that in a month, the kids would be ready to start solids. At least, she said they'd be ready once they started waking up in the middle of the night to eat (they have been STTN since 5 weeks :D), and she said my DD would be first. It seems so EARLY!! I mean, of course pedi knows best, but I'm just curious as to when everyone else's kids started on solids. Is this normal? Or am I just not ready to let go of my newborns?? :)

We started with cereal at 4 months and veggies at about 4.5 months

That doesn't sound right. Maybe the pedi was confused or there was a miscommunication. The earliest I've heard is 4 months old, and the current standard is 6 months. The babies also have to have good head control or they can choke.

we started on solids at 6.5 months - in Canada it's generally recommended to start solids at 6 months. babies do perfectly fine on all breast milk/formula until 6 months & many babies are even fine until 9 months (although waiting that long can make them more resistant to different flavours & textures). here's a good link for info on starting solids - it's focused mainly on BFing, but it has good general info about when & why to start solids. GL!

That's how I felt about it too! She said she thought it would be good to do it with the spoon and blah blah blah...they will be 4 months old in a month.

Good to know that others have started that early also, I thought she was nuts for a minute. Thanks also for which poster posted that link!

My pedi told me a good rule of thumb is when they are able to swallow--usually you can tell by when they are starting to swallow their drool (this usually starts happening around 4-5 months). Just a thought too, it's great you are asking around for advice because Pedi's don't always know what's best--trust your gut too!

My pedi recommended they start at their 6 month (real age) appointment, but they just shy of 4 months adjusted age. It surprised me that she wanted them to start so early adjusted age wise, but one of my daughters was ready. Neither of my girls have ever woken up in the middle of the night due to hunger since 8 weeks old adjusted age. We started on rice cereal for about a month and then tried veggies and fruits. My one daughter also just got the hang of solids and loves to try and feed herself. If you want to put off solids for a while longer, I can't see it hurting them. I know they are at least supposed to start by 6 months of age.
