Just wondering when you started to replace actual foods for baby food, i.e. cut up banan instead of puree?
Also, how do you know how much to give, or do you just let them decide?

I started doing that around 10-11 months and would supplement with purees...there were some things they would not touch with a ten foot pole unless it was in puree form (like most vegetables). I would also let them decide how much of the cut up food they wanted to eat. Good luck!

My two seemed to prefer thicker purees from the get go, so we're already trying soft bits of food. They do pretty well with things like avocado, banana and hard-boild egg yolk. I just cut them into little pieces and put them in their mouth. Sometimes they'll chew for a while and then it just falls out in a big mush, but they're getting better at swallowing.

    (they're 7.5 months)

we started giving finger foods for practice after their purees around 8 months old & then switched entirely to finger foods around 10 months old as they wouldn't take anything from a spoon anymore. as a PP mentioned, i just let them eat as much as they seemed interested in. it's a bit of a trial & error process as every baby is so different in what they will or won't eat & in what quantities. so just take it slow, try lots of different things, be creative & before you know it, you'll be a pro at feeding your LOs. GL!

I think it was around 10 months (maybe the latter portion) and I started with mashing up banana or sweet potato with a fork and seeing how they did with that. I also used a mesh feeder to get them used to holding something. They loved eating peaches from these (though I didn't love the mess).

We are starting to give them tastes of things - the Ped said at the 9 month apt to start giving them little bits of things to try. They still eat mostly the pureed but I think this is getting them interested in feeding themselves and trying new tastes and texture. It is messy but fun to watch thier reaction.

I started putting finger foods on their plate at about 10 months and would let them pick at the foods while I spoon fed them the purees to fill them up. I just went by their guide.

Around 9-10 months they were batting the spoon away, and wanted to do it themselves, so I went to mostly finger foods at that point. I let them be the guide as to how much.

My girls are already eating "real" foods. I can give them cookies, yogurt bites, cereal, pretty much anything thats small enough for them. They dont choke at all and they always chew before they swallow. I would say they actually eat more real food then baby food. I would just say to try it and see if they can eat real food and if they can then great, if they cant just try again in a week or 2. The first thing I gave my girls was baby mum mums. They dissolve pretty easily and are big enough for baby to hold. Good luck!

We started finger foods at 7-8 months. Now some meals are all finger foods, and some meals have both finger foods and purees. They seem to really like both - it just depends what I have on hand.
