Solids--many questions

We've been doing one solids meal a day for about a month now, and when I say "meal," it's a pretty small amount--1 T of cereal plus half a jar of stage 1. I know it's just for practice right now; and they are still eating around 30 oz. of formula a day. I'm curious, though, when should I add a second solids meal? When and by how much should I increase their cereal servings?

They are 5 1/2 months old--if any of you wanted to share your schedules/menus from around that age, I would love it.

    TIA!

I would suggest adding a second meal around 6 months. HTH :) .

I began feeding mine a jar of food with cereal at every "meal" (3x a day) around 6 months. 1 jar usually lasted the whole day, until they were about 7 months... all except for my 8 year old... she was a 9 lb-er and so she decided she wanted to eat more earlier than the others. Just give them what the will take.

I added a second solids meal (breakfast) at 6 months and then added the last (lunch) at 9 months. I would just try and give a bit more of something one time if they seem like they will eat more and see if they eat it. If so, just start giving them a tad more at each feeding. Let them guide you.

As far as food we were just doing stage 2's with cereal mixed in. We were not doing any table food yet.

at the 6 month ped appt we were told they should be getting 3 meals of solids per day. here is how a day looks.
    6am- wake up - bottle
    6:30-8 nap
8:30 -9 oatmeal and fruit 1 full ikea sized bowl between the two of them
    9-12 play
    12 - bottle
    12:30 nap
2:30 - lunch mixed grain cereal and veg
3:30-7 play and maybe small nap
7pm - dinner - mixed grain cereal and veg followed by bowl of applesauce or other fruit
    7:30 - bath
8 - bottle (usually dont drink much though)
    8:30 -bed

usually one jar of stage 2 food plus enough cereal to fill those plastic ikea bowls is enough but if they are still going strong i'll feed a dessert of fruit. hope that helps.

Mine are about that age (adjusted) and we are doing almost exactly what you are doing. I don't think we'll be adding a second meal for quite a while yet. I think I'll wait until they are eating more at the meal I am offering right now.

I did one meal a day from 4 mo-9mo. old. I did a brunch. At 9 mo. old, I did brunch and a dinner at 5pm. At 10 mo. old, I did 3 meals a day, which I still do. Sometimes Nathan gets a snack.

We didn't start solids until 5 1/2 months and didn't add a second meal until after 7 months, so I'm probably not going to be much help. However, here are links to schedules of other FY mommas- I included both 5 and 6 months schedules from the FY handbook. HTH.

I think I read on another post that you are getting ready to go back to work. I work FT outside the home (since 12 weeks); so that is our other challenge. I'll be sending this second meal with them to school, which is fine; but I'm dreading adding the third meal. Our mornings are already pretty rushed with just a bottle.

Aargh. Logistics. I swear I'm going to be able to plan a major military operation after these boys hit 2 years old  .

Thanks, everyone! This helps. I think maybe I'll add one more small meal after the 6 mo well visit. Our pedi is really high on solids--he's been pushing since they were 3 mo old. I "held off" until 4 1/2; but I'm sure he'll encourage us to add a second and maybe a third meal. Third meal is going to have to wait for logistical reasons. ;)
