    Hey
My dd and ds don't seem to be liking solids too much. They will eat the stage 2's {not much, by the way} but the stage 3's, puffs, anything with chunk to it, they gag on it and then will no longer allow the spoon near them! My question is, should I just keep trying night after night, or give them a break for a bit and try again? They won't pick up the puffs, so I put it in their mouths and they spit it out! They will eventually get it, right?? And sippies, they won't take any fluids from there at all! [IMG] I have tried so many times, when they see the sucker they put their head to the side and that's the end of that. What should I do? I am so worried about all this "drop the bottle by a year" thing and hearing of so many babies on table foods, which by the way seems like it will NEVER happen with these two, that I get worried..what else is new? Do you all think they just aren't ready for the "next step"? Help! TIA!

Liz, don't panic! I promise they won't go to college and say "Hi...My name is Anthony/Angie, and I (as they look down, full of shame) was still drinking a bottle at...sniff, sniff, 14 months! [IMG] Ok, I know I am being sarcastic [IMG], but really, no big deal. I do agree, that the sooner you get them off the bottle around a year, the better, but it's nothing to worry about! You have 4 months, to get them good at drinking out of sippies! I would keep giving it to them, and just let them play with it, they will get it one day, that there is something in there, and they can get it out!

As far as the chunky solids. They might not be ready. Just keep experimenting, but don't force it...they will get it.

    You are doing great! [IMG]

I'd just keep trying, every day. It's hard and frustrating, I know, when they won't eat, but practice makes perfect. Offer the sippie each meal too.

My girls didn't take off with solids and sippies either, but what worked for us in the end was consistency and always sitting down to dinner with them. I think they enjoy eating what we eat when we are eating it at the same time.

Becky -------> [IMG] j/k. I know that it wouldn't be sooo horrible and you never know about the college thing, could happen! lol They LOVE to play with the sippy cups, but not drink out of them. [IMG]
Susan, thanks for your response. I am going to keep on giving it to them. Do you all think that table food would go over better then the baby food?

    Hi there,

My little Meagan will eat pretty much anything we give her so she hasn't had a problem with the stage 3...but my little Kaite...she actually gets the "heebie jeebies" when she tries the tsage 3 stuff.

What I usually do is put a small amount on the spoon and then dip that into something else that is a stage 2 for her. I might dunk the stage 3 into stage 2 applesause. It seems to make it a little easier for her. I usually only gove her a few bites just to get her used to the texture and then she finishes the stage 2 and Meagan finishes the stage 3 jar.

I wouldn't push it though. They will eventually get the hang of it.

As far as sippy cups go...I have just been giving the girls the sippy cups in the afternoon between their 3:00 bottle and their dinner bottle. They usually play in their walkers (I know, Bab-Mommy, but they LOVE their walkers) and I just put it on the tray in fron of them and let them try to figure them out.

I started out with water and now I add just a little applejuice and water it down. Within about 2 weeks, they were both all excited about their sippy cups and they both drink out of them, usually finishing about half the cup.

    Hope that helps!

    Solids:
1 Try mixing part of a 3 with a whole 2 that way there is like only one chunk per spoonful.
2 Try giving them a noodle(from spagetti or hamburger helper) and then eat some noodles yourself. Mine much prefered food knowing I was eating it too.

    Sippies:
1 Maybe they don't like that kind of sippy. I changed mine to Nuby's at 9 months and now we are transitioning to Straw cups. Nubys or Straw cups are good and easy for them to drink out of.

I wouldn't stress it. I think the "rules" for eating & solids, etc, are more like guidelines. My nephew would have nothing to do with any solids - baby food, NOTHING - until he was a year old.

My guys gagged a lot on stuff for awhile, too. Anything from OUR plates, though, they loved. Have you tried that? Johnny in particular, it was funny, I'd offer him a bite of say, bananas & he would act like it was poison. A bite of mashed potatoes off my plate, though, and he loved it. [IMG]

I would keep offering it to them, but just for a minute. If they push it away or gag or just aren't interested, just wait till next time. You could try taking a break for a couple days; if you know they're not going to take it, no sense in wasting the food.

We're still working on the sippies. I think you have to find the right one. I got some from Nuby that they liked, they had much softer spouts. Then I got a stage 2 from Playtex that was working great until they got teeth.....now they're too amused from the sound of their teeth clacking on the plastic to try to drink. [IMG] I've been taking the lid off lately & just letting them drink like it's a regular cup.

Thanks ladies, I will try not to stress it. I like the suggestions and will try to do the 1/2 stage 2's and some stage 3's and buy some Nuby's, I have read alot of ladies on here using them, so there has to be something to them! [IMG] I would try table food but am so terrified of choking since it may not be mushy enough and I am home alone when they eat, I know, I am going to have to do it at some point! Thanks!

We have had alot of problems with gagging - and many times vomiting - here too. They are just starting to get a little better during this last week. When they were really bad, I stuck strictly to the puffs and broke them up into very small pieces. I also try to put things off to the side of their mouths over their gums. It is when it get on the back of their tongues that they gag/vomit. I like the puffs because even if they start to gag, it will quickly disolve. They are now eating whole puffs, 1/2 cheerios, and very small pieces of soft table food.

Another thing that seemed to help was when I chewed (exaggerated)with them and said 'chew it up'. I even have a little chant that I do now when they start to gag - "chew it up, chew it up, chew it up,up,up,up,up,up, chew it up" I also clap or do a little dance while I say it and it helps to distract them and keep them from losing it. A little goofy, but when I say it, they will actually start chewing.

It does seem like it is taking forever to transition with this whole food thing, but I can finally see that it is getting better! Good luck. Stephanie
