I just wanted to see what everyone’s experience is with feeding and sleeping.

My girls (6 months) were up to 8 oz of formula when we started solids. They have 4 bottles a day. Now that we have started solids, I am not sure how much formula I should still be giving them. And I am not sure how often they should have solids. Right now I give them about 4 oz of solids for 2 of their feedings (1st or 2nd and last). When they have 4 oz of solids, I try to give them 4 oz. of formula to equal 8 oz. total feeding. The other feedings, I just give them 8 oz. of formula.

Is that right? At this age, how much solids should they be getting and how often? And, how much formula do they need? I am not sure how to combine the two and make sure they are getting enough to eat/drink.

As for naps- my girls are taking 3 naps- at 9ish, 1ish, and 4ish. They go to bed at 7pm-ish and wake up around 7:00 (usually earlier). For the first nap they sleep 1-2 hours. The 2nd and 3rd they sleep about an hour.

How long do they maintain 3 naps?

Thanks so much for your help!

As far as the solids, when we went to 2 meals their formula intake dropped to about 6-7 ounces per bottle 4 times a day, and when we went to 3 meals (around 7 months I think) their formula intake didn't drop at all. My pedi recommended that by 9 months we were doing 3 meals of solids per day along with 20-26 ounces of formula, but different pedi's have different suggestions. I would just go based on their cues. I offer 7 ounces, sometimes they drink it all and sometimes they only drink 4 or 5.

As far as naps, DD dropped that 3rd nap around 7 months and DS just recently at 8 months dropped it. It was a tough transition b/c DD was ready to drop the 3rd nap without the 2nd one getting any longer. After a few tough weeks she went down to 2 1.5 hour naps and now DS does the same. We have a 7 a.m. wakeup, naps at 9:30 and 1:30 with a 6:30/7 bedtime. I think the HSHHC book says that the 3rd nap should phase out by 9 months. Again though just follow their cues, if they aren't fighting you going down for that nap and are still sleeping well at night then I wouldn't change a thing.

They aren't really fighting naps...but the past few days my DD2 who was nornally taking long naps only slept about 45 minutes for the first 2 naps...and then an hour for the 3rd. So, I guess we arent ready yet. I just feel like I have lost all of the experience I had with my first two kids! Must be sleep deprivation! :)

I think the formula intake should stay the same even when you add solids. We always give a bottle first to make sure they get enough milk, then solids about 30 min later.

Right at 6 mo mine droped the third nap. It was getting to be only 30 min and then they were fighting it even more. So we went down to 2 naps. Much nicer for me. I bf so I don't know how much milk they dirnk. I would bf and then 1 hour later give solids and feed until they wouldn' eat anymore. SOme days that was 2-3 oz each and some days it was 6-8 oz each. By 9 mo they were mostly on finger foods with little baby food. They like i tmore and I don't have to feed them.

Solids are just for practice now so formula intake shouldn't change. At 6 months old here was our schedule (approximately):

    7am wake up
    7:30am bottle
    8:30am until about 11am nap
    12pm bottle
    1:30-3:30pm (approx) nap
    4pm bottle
    5-6 nap
    7pm bottle
    7:30pm bed
    between 10 and 11pm bottle

(they didn't drop that last night bottle until 8 months old). HTH.

At 6 months we were just starting to add a second meal of solids. We started with evening solids and then added breakfast solids. I always gave a bottle first and then did solids about an hour later. As the pp's said, solids are just for practice and it really shouldnt affect the formula intake much.

Our schedule was alot like Leighann's but we still had at least one night feeding mixed in there too. We did not drop the third nap until about 8 months and then they went to bed super early at 5:30pm.
