We've given both rice cereal and oatmeal to our girls for several weeks. They've had no problems and actually seem to get most of it inside them. Today we decided to try sweet potatoes. Both girls did a little gagging and didn't seem as excited about it as they are about cereal. Is this common? Should we go back to just cereal for a while or give the sweet potatoes another try?

I think it's just an adjustment thing, but I'm not sure. I gave Benny barley cereal yesterday, and he gagged through the whole meal. I plan to try it again tomorrow, and see if he still gags.

I would just keep letting them try it. My DD was very picky when we would introduce a new food to her so I just kept giving her the foods she did not care for. Now she will eat just about anything.

I tried squash.... and got gagging the entire time. I think I'll try sweet potatoes next - and go back to squash later. Must be normal????

I tried sweet potatoes alone. I think I will mix some with cereal today and see how it goes. Thanks for the replies everyone.

It's probably just a new taste and it does sometimes take time to get used to. Tell us how it goes with adding the cereal.

I agree with pp's its probably them getting used to a new texture and taste. I would keep trying it with them.

I'd give it another try. I've got 2 gaggers. They gag on just about EVERYTHING the first time.

Yep, keep trying. It can take them up to about 10 times to accept a new food. I had a gagger too! :)
