How often is it afe to drink a soda? I drink plenty of water ( mostly all i drink) so i figure i drink enough to "flush" it out anyways. Ive been craving a nice cold coke or dr.pepper, just wondering whats the effects?

I have never drank or craved soda in my life, but I find that a cold coke does wonders for how I feel. I've basically decided that I will allow myself about half a can of caffeine free regular coke (I think the aspartame and artificial sweeteners are worse than the sugar, but don't have any GD issues).....when I told one of my doctors she said definitely not the fake sugar, but try to have a few ounces at a time.

My feeling (and maybe it's rationalization!) is that given how health conscious most of us are, compared to, say, our grandmothers and mothers who may have smoked and had cocktails during their pregnancy because nobody knew better at the time - a little soda won't damage the babies. Again, JMO, not a medical stamp of approval!

I don't think a little soda in moderation is a bad thing - my previous OB said that one glass a day was probably fine. I bet there are a lot of different medical opinions on this, though, and I would ask your doc. I can tell you that I drank Mountain Dew almost every day during my first pregnancy! Not a whole lot, but I totally craved it! My 3 1/2 yr old is just fine - we call him the Mountain Dew baby whenever he gets a little hyper! Ha!

My ob said 24 ounces a day is fine. She was more concerned with the amount of sugar than the amount of caffeine. I will go for weeks without one, and then once in a while I'll have a 32 oz. soda. Probably not the best...but sometimes I gotta do what I gotta do!

I have been craving soda like crazy... in particular Diet Dr.Pepper or Diet Cherry Pepsi. But, I know the aspartame and caffeine are both bad so I have found the ultimate pop for the pregnant woman... Diet Rite Tangerine! I like the flavor (my husband very much dislikes it), it has no caffeine, and is sweetened with Splenda, which isn't bad for you. It's a win/win soft drink! The Diet Rite products come in a variety of flavors, so you aren't just limited to tangerine. (cola, black cherry, white grape, etc.)
And if you really want that regular soda... I agree with the previous posts... a little won't hurt.

    Helen

I took out a line about Diet 7up... I noticed at the store today that it is sweetened with aspartame (a pregnancy no-no).

I have a half a coke every other day probably if that. Just enough to keep the cravings at bay. A certain amount of caffine is acceptable and this falls well under that. I just try not to have too much because of the sugar. Somedays I splurge, other days I don't have any at all.

I had a regular Coke a day. It was really the ONLY thing that helped curb my morning sickness. We did keep a few caffeine-free Coke's on hand in case I really wanted more, but usually the fully-loaded version, once a day, did the trick.

I was told ONE can a day and that it should be a 7 up so that there is no caffeine in it!

I live on Diet Coke alone so pregnancy was rough for me. The moment I found out I was pregnant I switched completely to water. That being said, one night I was at a NASCAR race and I just didn't think I was going to make it without my soda so I went for it. I drank an entire 20 ounce bottle and I treasured every sip! I didn't have another until K&K were about a month old (I had some post delivery swelling issues) but even now I can taste that wonderful soda I had at the races. I say go for it and enjoy every sip!

I never really drank soda too much. Here and there. Since I have been pregnant, I have dreams about cherry coke and fountain sodas. I allow myself to have one soda every few days. If not, I would go crazy. I tell myself all the time---anything in moderation [IMG]

I must be terrible! lol I drank soda every day while I was pregnant with DS, and I have this time too! I don't drink a lot, but I like to diet and regular both - I know I'm weird. My OB actually prefers I drink diet because I've had sugar issues - but either way - yeah, I drink plenty. [IMG]

I am a diet coke lover and I drink it everyday. My OB said it was fine. I switched to regular coke when I was pregnant with DS and gained a whole bunch of weight. This time around my OB told me diet coke was fine. So far so good. And DS turned out just fine. LOL

With regard to the caffeine, I was told that 1 cup of coffee/day was OK and 1 can of soda generally has about 1/2 the caffeine of a cup of coffee.

my dr suggested the caffiene free coke or 7-up, he said the artificial sweatener and caffiene should be avoided but as long as you are drinking enough water it won't hurt anything

I don't know about a safe amount, but with this last pregnancy I craved rootbeer all the time. I still drank plenty of water but because I was sick to my stomach and puking it was the only thing that made me feel better.
Ya gotta do what ya gotta do. p

I wouldn't drink caffeine during the 1st trimester since that is when the babies are still forming all their important systems but an occasional soda afterwards probably isn't going to hurt. We had a few complications with the girls so I only had one cup of iced tea a week during my twin pregnancy but I drink a little bit more during this singleton pregnancy because everything is going great. I would stay away from artificial sweeteners, anything with soy, or energy drinks though and try to keep the soda consumption from getting out of hand due to the caffeine and high fructose corn syrup.

I had atleast 2 Pepsi's a day. I felt horrible without it. My ped said whatever made me feel better was worth it. (in moderation of course)

My OB says 2 cans a day is just fine. I figure the effects are being split by two babies anyway. In fact, just the other day, my also-pregnant OB and I were scrapbooking together while we were both drinking a 20-oz. Diet Dr. Pepper. I was extremely strict during my first pregnancy, but this time I have had two cans of Diet Dr. Pepper each day. Everything seems to be fine.

    HI there,

I didn't drink that much soda during my pregnancy, but I did make a cocktail that I have to this day: cran-raspberry juice and soda water.. it eliminated my craving for carbonation, tasted yummy and it was good for my urinary tract to boot.

I also agree that anything in moderation won't hurt -- I drank a few diet cokes during my pregnancy and i have healthy boys. I just wouldn't drink more than 1 can a day. But ask your OB if you're unsure.

I totally know what you're going through I never drink pop, just water and while I was pregnant I craved Coke so much. My doctor said it was ok to have one a day.

Dr Pepper was the one thing I always wanted when I was pregnant with my DD. I thought it was so funny b/c I spent 3 months before getting pregnant weaning myself off caffiene...
Anyway, I ended up allowing myself the occasional glass, but did half Dr Pepper half rootbeer which didn't affect the taste too much.
I would say if you want a soda have one every once in awhile, moderation is the key, and maybe buy only the little cans.

I drink usually 1-2 sodas per day. 1 caffeinated Coke and maybe a sprite or gingerale.

I didn't drink any caffeinated drinks or have any chocolate until I was 16 weeks. I didn't want to until after my first trimester but I'm sure it is safe. Now I do eat chocolate and I've had an occasional soda but I usually drink sprite if I feel like a soda because it's decaffeinated.I think anything in moderation is okay. You should enjoy a soda!

My MFM told me that if I wanted a soda, to drink one. Everything in moderation. But I did not want a lot of soda for some reason when I was PG with the twins. Just one every now and then. I love water.
