The girls seem to be doing everything else they are "supposed" to - starting to hold their heads, track us and their toys with their eyes, grabbing at toys and my hair - but they aren't social smiling yet. I thought this didn't really start until about 3 months, but the doctor said it could start as soon as 6 weeks. She said "they still have time" which kind of freaked me out. They were born at 36 weeks with no NICU time and no issues except for my high-maintenance Baylinn who has reflux and now thrush.

When did your start to smile? Should I be worried? What could it mean?

My DD#1, didnt smile AT ALL until she was 7 months!! DD#2 smiled before we left the hospital. and DD3# is textbook... I think they are all different. I'm sure she's fine, just not a big smiler! :)

For us it was relatively late (at least, late compared to the age at which other people claim their babies started smiling) -- more like 4 months. I did sort of worry a little, but they were right on track in all other ways, so I tried not to worry too much. They are very smiley now. :)

DD started smiling at around 6 weeks( she was always the flirty one!), but DS didn't smile until about 4 months. And once he started, there was no stopping him. He is still all smiles and giggles at this point. Give it time and don't worry!! :hug99:

Mine smiled around 6 weeks BUT let me be the first to tell you that I am a worrier about milestones too!! Being a first time parent I worried if anything was "off", even if I was reassured by a ton of people. So I can totally emmpathize but the main thing to remember is that the pedi is not concerned.

Mine started around 4 months. I was never led to believe that it could be earlier so I am shocked at others being 6 weeks! Glad I didn't know it then because I may have worried "FOR NO REASON." I worried about other things like reflux, RSV, etc. I wouldn't worry at all if I were you :D

we "thought" they were smiling at 7 weeks. But when we hit 3 months we realized what a real smile was!

Mine started a few weeks ago but they have to be REALLY rested (ie, in the a.m.) and we really have to work for it (as in, sweet talk, big smiles). I wouldn't worry about it - every baby is different!

Lucas started at about 3 1/2 months and Jonas 4 1/2. However, Lucas smiles more, laughs less, while Jonas laughs a lot but smiles less. Does that make sense?

Edited to add: good laughing only started about 2 weeks ago.

I've been wondering this myself, as my older DD started smiling at about 5 weeks (only sporadically).

Karina has given us a couple of smiles just in the past few days. She smiles all the time in her sleep. Kevan hasn't smiled at us directly yet, but also smiles in his sleep....and has even chuckled once.

I can't wait until they both start doing it all the time -- it's such an amazing reward!

Mine were 37 weekers no problems, they are just starting to really smile at us now and the just turned 12 weeks old. It has been about the last week that they have been doing it. Before now it was just the ocasional gas smile.

We saw smiles pretty early, but they weren't at us. As much as we wished they were! haha ... I would say probably around the 3 month mark did we feel we were getting smiles of recognition to us ... My DS smiles easily ... with my DD you really got to work for it.
