We started with Cream of Wheat with some formula to thin it out. They LOVE avocado and just tried banana today...what should we try next? I was thinking some jarred butternut squash that someone gave us. I have a hasidic (sp?) jew friend who needed to get some organic jarred stuff out of her house and so I loaded up! Just a quick question though...it says to heat it in the microwave and we don't have one. Is it necessary to heat it? I am totally looking foward to making our own, but hate to waste good organic jarred stuff :) TIA!!

I think the squash should be fine for you to try next. We have tried everything now so I dont really remember what we started with but there was really no Rhyme or reason for what I fed them and when. I was told it doesn't really matter what order you do the foods in so long as you only introduce 1 fruit or vegetable every couple days to watch for a reaction.

As for the heating it is not really necessary IMO. I usually heat the our babies food for 15 seconds in the microwave but I have ocasionally fed it to them room temperature. If you really want it heated though you could always simmer a pot of water on the stove and warm it up that way (with the lid of the jar off).

the squash should be fine. as for the heating, when we used gerber and beechnut foods, I NEVER heated it. everything was served room temperature. to be honest, it never occurred to me to heat it :fool: but in the end i like the fact that they were able to eat it room temp. it made things a lot easier when on the go, kwim?

I never heated mine either. I figured that way if we were on the road they would eat it regardless and not be picky because it wasn't warm. When we started fruits/veggies our pedi told us to start with orange veggies, then green, then fruits. We were told to try them for 3-5 days each to make sure there are no allergic reactions.

I was given this website by another mom here (probably Becky!!):

I never heated baby food either, but if you need to reheat it out of the fridge you could put some in a small container and then put that container in a bigger container of hot water. Sweet potatoes was one of our first foods, but the order doesn't matter.

That is a great website.

We only warmed if a container had been in fridge. You could try squash, sweet potatoes, carrots - anything orange or yellow. We did the green veggies last - peas, mixed vegetable, green beans.

I would serve it room temp. If you must heat it up you can get a pan and put the open jar in it, add enough water to go about 3/4 of the way up the jar and heat. Stir and test the food until it's as warm as you want.

You could feed them the squash, then you get to move onto applesauce, peaches, sweet potato, carrots etc etc! This is a fun phase. :D

You can heat it by putting the jar in some hot water, like you can do with bottles.
